Q: Possibility of cancer of the mouth
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 30th, 2009
I noticed a hard circular bump on the inside of my mouth on my lower lip. The bump is somewhat movable, hard, and approximately a 1/4 diameter. I noticed it is a hard bump today, but have noticed swelling for 2 weeks now. I believe I bit my lip in the same general area 3 weeks ago, but that could have been a result of minor swelling rather than that cause of the bump. I am a smoker and have been for 4 years so I am concerned it could be cancer of the mouth.
Thanks.

You would like to know whether the bump on the inside of your mouth on your lower lip is cancer or not.

Cancer on the lips or inside the mouth is presented as a growth of the skin or lining, solid and elevated, sometimes bleeding and doesn’t heal for a long time.

Given the data that you described it isn’t likely that you might have cancer. It may be an infection on the injury you got when biting your lip. You may consider seeing your doctor or otorhinilaryngologist to rule out cancer.

Please keep in mind that I am trying to provide you with medical information here. I am not able to give you medical advice online. Please contact your doctor or a qualified healthcare provider such as an otorhinolaryngologist to learn more about diagnosis and treatment options.
