Q: Porridge and hypoglycemia

every morning i eat porridge oats with semi skimmed milk, is this a good way to start the day or should i be avoiding these as i have reactive hypoglycemia, thanks

My personal opinion is porridge oats can be incorporated as a breakfast. If you are using a brandname check for nasty additives.

Also you should be having a protein and fat source with this meal. The milk has some but also contains milk sugars so you shouldn't increase this.

I would substitutes the milk with water and mix some protein in, either whey, egg or casein powdered protein. Any other protein source would be fine although i find it hard to mix and match with porridge (chicken and porridge for example isn't the nicest breakfast!)

Fats such as nuts or an avocado would be a useful accompaniment.

The only person who can answer questions like this, is you. If you've been eating porridge/oats without a hypoglycemic attack 2-3 hours later, then I see no reason to stop eating it.

Personally some oats do me good. Nice slow energy release. Keeping portion size in moderation of course.

fibre with each meal will go a long way too Smile
