Clicking / popping sound under rib cage
Hi All,

Doing a search on the internet has brough up this site, the symtoms you are all describing sound very simular to what im experiencing, like a popping / clicking under my left rib cage, just near the solar plexus and its constant when im sitting back against a chair with stomach musscles relaxed. Im also having this wierd neck/gum/bottom fron teeth sensation that is uncomftable so dont know if related. the popping doesnt hurt just "noisy" and im noticing it more when im moving / driving , almost like a gurgle but higher up.

Any ideas?

I have the same thing. I went to the doctors, only to come up empty handed with no potential information as to what it might be. I got an X-Ray, and it did show up. However, they said it was a "normal anomaly", in what case I highly doubt. I've been doing frantic research, as I am worried sick about it, and I've come from possibilities of Gastritis, to even an ulcer. All of the possible causes I researched are linked to "possible upper abdominal discomfort" and therefore I believe it would take a lot of testing to figure out exactly what it is. Anyone who has this should seek a doctors help, and try to get as many tests done. Ex: X-rays/Blood tests/etc... Good luck to all who have this weird discomfort.

I have the same problem (excluding the gas) I'm 16 and I've had this problem for the last year and a half. The "thing" is under my right rib though. I went to several doctors and did a lot of tests last year and they said that 'there wasn't anything there'. I get very short of breath when running now (and im not out of shape) and i can constantly feel it, not in a painful way, just an irritating way. I thought it was the rib itself, but now i dont know what this 'thing' is. I just want it to go away.

Everyone I have had this exact problem for a year and a half and have been shooed off by docs as I have little pain. I have been back several times and demanded tests.all clear. im 24, non smoking, slightly underweight. I have no pain. However I believe this is a muscular and gastro problem. Here's why. Might be a bit gruesome, but I feel a sensitivity or dull ache in the same area when I squeeze the muscles you use when u go toilet for the business. Its tender. I hav also been told I have nervous stomach and IBS. All of which cause slight bloating. I think the bloating irritates this muscle and pushes it slightly outta place, causing the discomfort, but no feeling of lump or hardness. Also it never happens over the other side. And when I was pregnant and the baby moved all my organs, this problem stopped temporarily. Also I eat very sporadically and dont have regular meals. When I manage to, these symptoms seem better. Heat from a water bottle and bath provide temporary relief. Learning reflexology now to ease it. Its hard to stop because its actually a new awareness of this part of our body, and we have to unlearn the habit of noticing it. Hope this helps. xxx

Popping noise under rib
I too have the same problem. Have your doctor check you for a hiatal hernia. Maybe there is a massage technique you can use to keep your stomach down from your hernia.

POPPING UNDER LEFT RIB CAGE-WHEAT GLUTEN SENSITIVITY?
Hi all...

ive had this pain for maybe 15 years on and off. after many many days/nights wondering what it is, its possible i might be on to something... i have found out i am sensitive to wheat gluten. i get pain/popping under my left rib cage (which is where your/my stomach is). sometimes it gets so bad it can radiate into my back and neck if it gets real bad. i went to the doctors multiple times. sometimes it got so bad i thought i was going to die. eventually i found a doctor that asked me if i ever considered the possibility that i had a sensitivity to wheat gluten. i said... what are you talking about???? anyway, long story a bit less long... i was tested and it came back neg. but still having the pain, i began testing myself to see how my body reacted to wheat (gluten). what i found is it has a cumulative effect on me. once i had been off it for a month +, i felt much, much better. i could sometimes eat wheat with no immedate effect at all. sometimes i would eat it and be up all night on the toilet with horrible gas pains. but if i eat it regularly, it always catches up with me. i think the popping might be swolen intestines. i believe why it can cause pain beyond the immedate area is because it puts pressure on everything else (i.e. ones back). i would strongly suggest you all might look into this. they say its extremly common problem and most people have never heard anything about it. youd think doctors would know more. they dont. take what they say with a grain of salt.

Popping & clicking under ribs (both sides)
Hi everyone,

I did a search on google for "popping and clicking in ribs" and found this, as I have that problem. Same as most of you, it doesn't hurt as such, it's just very uncomfortable. I have a bit of a theory though. I have had this "pain" in the past, perhaps 5 years ago, and it stopped, and it recently started again. The thing is that I was the weight I am now 5 years ago (a healthy weight), then I put on heaps of weight, the pain stopped, now I have the lost weight and it has started again. I think then it most likely has something to do with tendons and muscles. I also have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia (someone mentioned that condition here) so that could be a cause.
I will ask the doctor about it though, as I have to go to get something else diagnosed too.

Same thing.
I have the same exact thing, Im 13, but no difference I want to diagnose this or even learn more on the internet before I visit the doctor. I am physically active but there is NO pain what so ever. without the gad also. when I am in a position it starts to pop, it is very hard to explain. It is like a heart beat in that area but 20 times faster. One day I tried feeling around, but when I touched it to like squeeze or stop it from doing that. I was nauseated and needed to vomit immediately. I stoped sat down I didn't need to. It happens every hour at the most. It has increased and happens more often. I have abs so its hard to tell whats the biggest part. if it is blowing up. but I cannot tell. As far as I know its pooping out more than any other in my abdominal area. I do not know what it is. Can anyone ask some questions to narrow this search down. Maybe I have the same exact thing.

continued
I've noticed it has become more frequent with exercise and standing. It must be muscular because it is on the surface, right under the skin. If it were an organ or organs it would be deeper in feeling. Mine feels like a tiny pop, like a rubber band sliding against something hard. A muscle could be sliding against a rib...is that possible? That is my most recent guess. I cannot imagine an ulcer being that close to the surface or it being related to movement. Ulcers are mostly related to eating or stress and I would think would be a sharp or dull pain. I have no pain with my popping.
I have experienced the bubbling feeling that someone else described. It has just came about since my job has become more stressful. Could be H. pylori? I wonder.
Also I have thought that it may be attributed to the diaphragm muscle. This muscle covers all of your organs right under the rib cage and it moves with you throughout the day as you breathe and exercise.

Popping/sliding under both ribs
Is there any medical terminology for this? I have this issue that it feels like something is "popping" or "sliding" under or attached to the ribs. And I have it on both the right and left side. There is no pain. Is this part of the anatomy? A muscle? Cartilage? Is there a doctor or nurse or someone that has had a doctor tell them what it is, comment here, please?

Thank you.

i Too have this clicking, but it isnt every day. My diagnosis was Fybromyalgia and colitis. So there are soe similarities. I dont think its serious, and probably related to muscular or tendons.

I have really bad achilles, ocasional back pain, awful gas, and somtimes pains in other muscles n joints. Ooooh and really bad headaches sometimes.

The one thing i would say, is dont get yourself worked up and think its something serious, it probably isn''t, so stop telling yourself it is. I made this mistake for the 2years I''ve now had it. It was torture. Chin up, and keep smiling

I have it myself, it can also cause back pain, the popping is annoying but the only cure is prolotherapy which is a shot in your back that lets the tendons aroung the rib heal

Hi rib clickers, i am 29 years old, I started getting anxiaty attacks after a night of drinking alcohol where i felt like somone was sitting on my chest. I found burping releaved the symptoms(i just looked silly and rude.) A wave of anxiaty comes over my when i feel movement around my stomach/intestine/bowl area when i needed to go to the toilet, I also get terrible acid indigestion. My gutt feels slightly tendor but does not hurt and my stomach becomes bloated every now and then but seems to go. I also come over anxious with a dull tight sensation around my stomach area. I then noticed a clicking sensation when i felt the above symptoms. I have measured this, the clicking is 3 inches from the bottom of my breat bone where both sets of ribs meet. The clicking seems to go when i tense my abdominal muscles. I am booking in to see my doctor and will be printing off this blog to aid my cause. It looks like doctors dont seem to give these symptoms a second look unless you are in lots of pain. I do believe that although there is no pain it has caused undue stress, anxiaty and sometimes leads to panic attacks and a general state of worry.

Hi Guys,

Thank god I found this place. I really need answer for what I have. I'm over here in the UK and have had these symptoms for around 4/5 years now and its really taking over my life.First of all I'll explain my symptom:

It all started when I first began to notice that my heart liked to skip beats. The skipping would usually happen maybe once or twice a day or sometimes 4 or 5 times consecutively. In fact, I have been admitted to A & E twice in my life with prolonged episodes lasting a few hours of continuous skipping. This "skipping" was alot more evident after I ate/took a deep breath or moved in the wrong way. And they can usually be stopped if I burped or broke wind or in one extream case vomited.

Now:

This brings me on to that clicking or popping under my left rib cage. It is a Deep popping or clicking that is always present. It is not painful but quite uncomfortable and it feels like it puts pressure on my internal organs and makes me feel bloated. It is more noticeable and uncomfortable (sometimes painful) after I eat and in fact when it is at its most prominent my heart tends to do all the funny things then.

I also nearly always have heart burn and indigestion after eating that can last hours. I also get a rapid heartbeat after eating. Sometimes sweaty hands. I most definatly cannot excersice for hours after eating as my heart feels like its going to beat itself to death. I can subdue the rapid heart beat after eating by massaging that clicking or popping area.

I have been to the doctors and had ECG's and all sorts but my heart is fine. I strongly believe this condition is stomach based or gastrologically based. It feels like I need to remove that lump inside me that is clicking and then I will be fine, but doctors just don't have a clue.

HAS ANY HAD THESE SYMPTOMS AND FOUND OUT WHAT THAT CLICKING IS????

It is the stomach, I had the same thing. Changed my diet completely. I eat clean foods, I am talking about fresh foods, nothing from a box, no gluten. You may not be gluten in tolerant but totally gluten sensitive. Look at what you are eating, I love oranges but I have a terrible time digesting them. Meaning oranges are not for me. Try to drink 25 grams of sodium barcarbonate with some warm water, tastes like the dead sea but it helps. Morning dose. You will need to go to the bathroom. I did all the test you did. I also found out, I had high yeast or Candida in my body (happens whenever) this was causing rapid heart rate etc. So if that is your case NO MILK, or dairy. I hope this helps you. It helped me. I was miserable for years till I changed diet. OH pizza is a miserable experience once you change your diet. Good way to find out if you are sensitive. It takes 3-6 months depending upon you for the gluten to move out of your body. 2 weeks BS... it takes months.
