Pop-up ads are intrusive and harmful. (Page 1)

I really do love this forum, but the pop-up ads and encrypted ads make it undesirable. Even with browser addons that are supposed to block intrusive popups I still sometimes get them and my malware removal programs recognize them as malignant. The flash ads can't be blocked without special browser addons and they restart every time you load a different page. It's like having the same "hey you're fat!" commercial screaming at you every time you change the channel.

I understand that bandwidth costs money but throwing intrusive and loud ads in people's faces every time they log on to browse is both rude and discouraging for the user. Personally I tend to donate to sites that don't throw ads in my face that force me to click on to stop the sound/close the window to see what I'm trying to look at behind it/open another browser window.

I don't know how much control the site owners have over this but I will tell you honestly that I'm more inspired to donate to support bandwidth by a paypal button I can click at my own will than intrusive ads that can be potentially harmful to my computer.

Please find a less intrusive way. A lot of potential subscribers are avoiding participating on this site because of the bombardment of pop-up ads.

We're looking into the matter.

It seems that there might be differences between browsers. If you're using IE7 instead of Firefox, you might be getting pop-ups even with ad blockers. Have you looked into Mozilla Firefox as your web browser?

We'll update you ASAP.

Darkmoon, what's the general content of the ads you're seeing?

I think I know what Darkmoon is talking about. When you read the forum posts, there will be highlighted blue words, such as the post made by Lilly Ivy above, where it says get Firefox. Some people, like myself, read posts by using our mouse icons to make sure we read every word. When you hit blue words in a post, a little box with an ad pops up. Sometimes accidentally moving your cursor icon over one of the blue highlighted words causes the ad to pop up as well. That box lingers for quite awhile and hinders reading of the entire post, especially if it is a word in the middle of the post box. Until that little ad box finally disappears, you can't read what the ad is blocking. I use IE and this happens, but I also use Firefox (which is what I am using primarily)and it happens either way. Also, the weight loss ads that are often seen on this forum are quite, uhm, well, for lack of words, insulting? I understand weight loss is health related, but the particular ads shown are those ones where it says something like "How I lost 50 lbs in two weeks" and I have accidentally clicked on one, and when I tried closing it, I got a little notice that looked like a Windows Error box and it said something on the lines of "I know you are skeptical, but look at my results. Are you sure you want to turn down this fantastic offer" and I actually had to close down the entire browser to be able to close down that ad offer. I do have antivirus and malware/spyware removers and I am sure the ad was not dangerous, but it was tagged as spyware. I think ehealthforum needs to seriously look at its sponsors and make sure they are legit. After all, this is a health forum, not youtube or something like it.

This is an ongoing problem on alot of sights and it is TOTALLY ANNOYING! I use the mouse arrow to read the posts also, and every time I do, those ads pop up! They never used to have them on this forum, as I have been posting here since 2005. I hope the administrators know how aggrivating this is, and also that it discourages us from wanting to visit this site.

Those blue words are annoying but I think Darkmoon is talking about all the diet ads on the front page. They are horrible and take up almost the entire page.

Lol. I think both are equally annoying, but the blue ones just get in the way of a post, especially for "cursor" readers like myself, and apparently raven53.

LOL and the ads are not really helpful, especially when one is assuming the acacia berry or some juice will magically make every ounce of fat disappear. Did anyone else notice that ad on here the other day? I saw one where the woman who supposedly lost all that weight also magically lost her stretchmarks and gained three or four shades in skin color...hmmm.

Please, don't get me started on ads, commercials, pop-ups...they ALL drive me insane! I wish we could ban them from tv, computers, magazines, and anywhere else they stick them! Every year it get worse too, and unless we want to go live in a cave, there is NOWHERE to hide from them!

It's so true! There are two ads that pop-up on yahoo IM that I can't get rid of and they really upset me. Even with my pop-up blocker on they don't go away. One is an abused bear with a ring pierced through his nose and the other is an abused dog that is difficult to look at. It triggers horrible feelings. They are ads to donate money for abused animals. Yeah, the stretch mark ad was a winner. She really needed that belly button ring with all those stretch marks! LOL

Maybe people should start boycotting any company that bombards us with ads. That would get them where they live! When I think of the money some companies waste with their repetitious ads, it makes me mad, because that money is passed on to us when they raise their prices!

Most of them are just scams anyway. People can't find real jobs so they have stooped to scamming innocent people.

I am not sure, but I believe most of these ads may be authorized by the site...It is not easy getting sponsors that want to invest in a big Forum...Being in the business field, I believe even though this may be annoying to us, it is one of those things that make a site more valuable...We are viewing their product in hopes that we may buy it...It may be annoying, but part of this big world that we live in called "progress"...

I realize I am just guessing on this, but if I had a product to sell to catch a person's eye, this would do it...Yet, like all of you I don't like it....However, I did notice how each of you picked up what these things were...This is their message being gotten across....

For my own self, all they do is annoy me more, and I won't even look at them or buy their products. As soon as an one comes up, I click it off, or switch the channel. Sometimes I marvel at how people ACTUALLY get paid for some of the rediculous ads they shove down our throats. True, some are interesting and quite entertaining, but many work in reverse, and aggrivate the heck out of me, and when you add how they raise the volume on the ones aired on tv and the computer...it's enough to make you want to throw a shoe at the screen!
