Q: Poly-cystic ovarian syndrome
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 15th, 2008
I had sex with my boyfriend (my only partner, and he is also faithful) three days before my period was due in August. Didn't get my period then, also not getting my period now. I've performed five pregnancy tests and had 1 pregnancy test from serum, all negative. My breasts are not sore, areolas are not pigmented, I am not nauseous, sensitive, fatigued. Why is it that I haven't had my period yet? Is it because of stress? Of my weight? This is the heaviest I have been since I first had my period. Please help. Thanks so much!

Current medical status: I am well, done with taking medication for pulmonary tuberculosis. Not taking any vitamins or any other food supplements. Normal appetite, normal amount of sleep. Very stressed though.
Current medical treatment: Went to have urinalysis and blood test performed. Urinalysis was normal and the pregnancy test based on the blood serum was negative.

Can't say what exactly is causing your period delay but according to your negative pregnancy tests one thing is for sure – pregnancy is not the cause.

Period regularity depends upon the normal function of the axis hypothalamus-pituitary-ovaries. There are many conditions that can disturb the normal function of this hormonal axis.

Stress can disturb the axis's function and can cause cycle irregularities including period delay.

Being overweight can't cause a period delay, but both conditions, being overweight and cycle irregularities, could be signs of the same disorder known as poly-cystic ovarian syndrome.

You could consult a gynecologist about this.
