Q: pneumothorax side effects ?

My husband was in an accident overseas in 2004. Part of his injuries was 2 broken ribs which punctured his lung. He had pneumothorax. 4 years later, he has trouble breathing. Does that injury cause life long problems? Or once the lung healed, he should have been ok? He hasn't gone to the VA yet for it, but, he can't do the things he use to do. He gets winded very easily now. The Va claims rep says it's not a major health problem. Question Mad

Up to 50% of patients who have a pneumothorax will have another, but there are no long-term complications after successful treatment.

Did your husband have surgery to correct the pneumothorax? There should be no long term effects after it has healed. Could he possibly be having another episode? Maybe a chest x-ray should be done to be sure his lungs are functioning properly.

no he hasn't had any x-rays or anything yet. We are waiting for the VA to make the appointments. He didn't have surgery for it either. They just put a tube in his chest to drain the blood and excess fluid. Thank you for the cite.

One more thing with VA. I deal with them as well. Do not wait for them to make appointments. Will either take months or not happen at all. Call your nearest VA hospital and ask for the number to Telephone advice program. They may be able to transfer you. Make sure you get the number. When you get on the phone with Telephone advice listen to the menus. Select where you are treated and then select make/cancel appointments. That should give you a human. If you get the voicemail by mistake go ahead and leave a message they are usually good at calling back. Just tell voicemail your are trying to set up an appointment. If they don’t call back go through the menus again and go through a different menu selection.

You can easily go in never ending circles when dealing with VA on the phone. Calling telephone advice eliminates that.

Good luck
