Q: Plaquenil and its side effects
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 7th, 2008
Of course I didn't have a problem until a 4 day weekend. Now it is monday, and I find my rheumatologist is out of the office, and nobody else in her office really handles lupus. My primary care dr is also out having surgery, my allergy doctor wants me to see my rheumatologist before he decides anything. I have a call into my rheumatologist's nurse and am still waiting for call.In the meantime, I am itching like crazy in spite of 100mg atarax plus claritan plus zyrtec, plus topical steroid cream (body) plus hydrocortison cream (face) and have been running a low fever for days. I was told at diagnosis to TELL THE DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY in case of rash, fever, or extreme fatique - but now that I am having these symptoms nobody seems to care or be very worried. QUESTION: Is this a common reaction to the plaquenil ? Does it mean I won't be able to take it anymore ? Or does my body just need to adjust ? or get label instead of generic ? Any idea ?

Lupus Answer A4390
List of other diseases, conditions, or injuries and their treatment: 2000 myledyspastic syndrome / refractive anemia (all counts low, not just red) 2005 fibromyalgia, chronic hives, severe allergy to trees/grass
Have a diagnosis for the current condition: yes
Diagnosis that has been suggested: diagnosed with lupus SLE on 6/12/08
Current medical status: diagnosed with lupus SLE on 6/12/08 and put on plaquenil 6/12/08 which seemed fine until a few days ago started with lumpy skin and extreme fatique and ending up with a terrible rash that started on back and chest and spread all over my body and is currently everywhere - worst on face and head
Current medical treatment: 6/5/08 on call dr (sheumatologies office) told me to stop taking plaquenil and take some benedryl 6/6/08 allergy dr agreed, said needed to hold on until monday when I could see my rheumatologist) 6/6/08 went to urgent med out of desperation, got rx hydrocortisone for face, advised take lots of atarax

Fatigue is the most common side effect from Plaquenil and skin rashes are also very common. If these side effects are unbearable for you, you can quit the Plaquenil and try a different medicine.

You need to consult a rheumatologist about the further therapy.
