Q: Planned Parenthood does sterilization?

I am wondering how true it is that PP does tubals or offers Essure, and how easy it would be for a really young woman to get the prodecure for one of them done. I was going to go for an IUD until I learned from someone that PP actually does offer permenant sterilization options. Has anyone here ever been sterilized at a Planned Parenthood? Is it a service all the clinics offer, or just some? If I can get the permenant option instead of t he semi-permenant one, I will definitely go for it (if I can afford it, anyway).

How old are you? How many children do you have? Those are usually questions all doctors ask - I'd think that PP would have some kind of cut off like that as well. Although when you know you don't want any (more) kids, I don't know why anyone can tell you differently KWIM.

Oh I realize they will ask me questions, and I have a feeling that, like most doctors, they will probably refuse me on the grounds that I am "too young" and will "change my mind". But I was just wondering if they actually DO perform sterilizations and if they discriminate based on age.

I think they do it (or at least some of them, different locations offer different services) and as far as age discrimination, you'll probably get different reactions at different locations. If you're really sure about it, you should start going to different locations and just asking about it.

I agree that they shouldn't be able to tell you that you can't have one because you're too young.

However, I'm 22, and I wouldn't get one even if I was "sure." I just can't imagine what my life will be like in 10 years and how I feel. But that's a personal thing, I'm sure you've thought about it.

Cambion- SOME PP do offer sterilization!

MANY abortion clinics do too, AND AGE IS NOT USUALLY NOT AN ISSUE.

I have seen 18-20 year olds sterilized.

My thoughts on this are that if you know, you know. And it is your body. I am always so amazed by my friends who have chosen not to have children - I think society makes it easier to have kids, than to not procreate.

Good for you for knowing you and not caving into what society thinks you should do!

I agree. I'm probably just hesitant to recommend it because I know it wouldn't be the right choice for me. To each her own!

I felt the same way when I was in my early 20's. I did not want any more kids! Yet somewhere inside me a voice said, "Don't." When I considered sterilization. I ended up with another - wanted and planned child - by the end of my 20's.

Now though? No way, Jose! No more kids! For realz this time. Wink

I do know very much now what I want as far as children (or lack thereof). I have known all my life I never wanted them and I have never had one of those 'heart-melting' moments that allegedly turn women into baby-rabid loonies.

I'll see if the PP where I live performs these types of procedures. I pray I don't need insurance to get it done if I find a clinic that does, because I have none. And from what I know, tubals WITH insurance cost upwards of $5000, and Essure is around $1200.

Good luck to you and Good for you for taking the consideration to do it! If you know you don't want children then good for you! Your taking great steps to not. I my self would have a ton of children if my husband would let me but you know how that goes! Smile I'm very proud that there are women who are out there that are like you and are responsible about not having children when they do not want them! Hope you find a clinic you can afford and good luck with it all!

sterilization
I desperately want to get sterilized. I have always wanted to. I have always known that I never wanted children. Now that I am past the age in which I could have healthy children anyway, I guess no doctor would tell me that I am too young or even if I do change my mind, I should not have children at my age. I would appreciate any advice about how to go about planning to get sterilized. Whom do I go to first? Do I speak to my own doctor? If he does not thiink I should get sterilzed can I go to some other doctor or health professional who will consider what I want? Do I have to give a reason that others think is "good."?
