Q: Pink mucus with bowel movement
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 8th, 2009
Lately during my bowel movement I would sometimes feel like having diahria but there would only be a little abount of mucus with pinkish/red color to it. My stools are sometimes come out thin and watery and often times I would feel like I cannot completely empty my bowel. I've also been experienceing sharp abdominal pain on the left side that would just happen for a split second and gone but would prolong for a few weeks at a time. I'm also feeling constipated and having diahria from time to time. I've actaully been having issues with my abdomen for about 6 years now and in the past six years I've had a CAT scan (six years ago) and two colonoscopies in the past 3 and a half years, with the last one being about a year ago. The results all came back normal. I'm wondering if I should be worried with the new development in having pinkish/red mucus come out when feeling like having a diahria and if another colonoscopy would be needed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Mark

Have you tried adding fiber supplements to your diet (such as Citrucel or Metamucil)? Some of your symptoms (intermittent diarrhea, constipation and abdominal cramps) sound like irritable bowel syndrome, which often responds to added fiber in the diet, and to monitoring your diet for any food items that bring on these symptoms. Bleeding into the stool is another matter, and is always a source of concern, even though it is rarely due to life-threatening causes in people your age (and, especially if you have had a thorough and normal colonoscopy within the last couple of years).

It is, of course, impossible to render a specific diagnosis over the Internet, and so I advise you to make an appointment with a Gastroenterologist.

Sincerely,
