pink eye resolution

I woke up with something that looked like a mild case of pink eye in one of my eyes. My eye wasn't crusted over, but it was much pinker than the other eye and there was some light discharge for maybe 2 hours.

I did nothing except stare forlornly at my expired insurance card. 5 hours later, my eye looked completely normal.

Everything I've read about pink eye suggests that it lasts for at least a few days. Was it even pink eye? What are the chances that I'm contagious for whatever the heck it was? Should I even drop $50 to go to a doctor?
