the other day i noticed what i thought was a pimple right at the top of my butt crack.....naturally i attempted th pop it to avoid discomfort...however when i popped it the liquid inside of the pimple ruptured and didnt break the skin.....

i didnt think anything of it till the next day when it was really painful to sit....it felt like there was a golf ball under my skin filled with liquid that i was able to squeeze and it would slightly move....for 4 days i dealt with the pain hoping it would go away on its own....i did alot of searches on the internet it read that it was a Pilonidal Cyst and if it became infected it had to be drained through incision by surgery....

the only time i go see a doctor is when i break a bone and am slighty afraid of going to doctors...so i went into my bathroom and put a mirror on the floor and squatted over it......i took a sewing needle and punctured the lump till it bled but nothing came out....

the next day i sat down harder than i planned to and the cyst sprung a leak....so back into the bathroom i went squatting over the mirror and i proceeded to squeeze the lump......the pus was shooting out in a fine stream....the odor of the pus was terrible....i squeezed till only blood was coming out....

feels much better...anyone ever experience this or any doctors have any imput?...

You really should go to the doctor and get this taken care of. Chances are that it will come back. This is a common ailment for people that drive for a living. The cyst can be recurrent and become infected. Let the doctor drain it and give you antibiotics.

according to some info ive read, the cyst is recurrent even if i go to the doctor....it said a doctor can pretty much only drain it and remove ingrown hair if he sees any but thats about it.....

i can do that myself....fortunately i also read that after age 40 the cyst cant really come back....so i only got another 10 years to go....

if it comes back like in a short amount of time then i will definately go seek medical treatment but until that day comes, im my own doctor...

I am a nurse so I can appreciate self treating, as I guilty of the same thing. Be sure you use the antimicrobial, no rinse, hand wash to sterilize any instrument you use. If you can stand the burn you can cleanse the area with the no rinse hand wash as well. If you have pain, redness, swelling, and the area feels warm/hot to the touch (as compared with the surrounding area) you need to see your doc. These are all signs of infection. That is not something you should ignore. All the best.

Hey guys and gals, im new here

Same boat, never had it, a small pain at the bottem of my spine not alot just a smalllllll amount of pain, then the next day it gotter a little worst, then on the 3rd day i couldn't sit so i had my girl look at it, (god bless her) so she did it and it was red and everything, so she said maybe it's a pimple or a boil or even an ingrown hair, so she put on a hot hot wash rag, a clean one. So she kept doing that 3 to 4 times a day and nothing happend. So i went to my friends house and was watching the flyers game and it felt like i was sweating down there. It was kind of strange because i don't sweat sitting down lol. so i get up went to the bathroom and took a tp and wiped it and it was brown with a very foul oder, i was like oo crap.

So after watching the flyers lose Sad i went home and had my girl look at it and sure enough there was a hole, so i told her to squeeze it and she did again (god bless her) and all this liquid came out and it smelled really bad, so this is the 4th day i had it, i looked on the internet and found this, so i was searching some more and i have found 10 people who had order a thing called furuncle-med, they said with in 2 days the swollen went down and in a week they could do the normal things that they can do.

So i just order myself some and i will let you know how it is.

The thing i wanted to know do i need to see the doc to have them drain it or could i just drain it myself? since ive been draining it, and people are saying use a hot compress so the boil can come to the top? now when i looked on the internet there was a cyst and a track leading to the spot where it is leaking from. Am i to put the compress on where the leak is coming from or where the liquid is filled at? That is where this is getting a little confusing. Thanks and i feel your pain guys and gals i really do, and i'm only 30 years of age. Thank you.

I popped mine also, but did yours just fill right back up with blood? Mine did almost immediately. It doesn't hurt and it's not swollen, but it's still there. I could pop it again easily but just blood would come out. Is it the same for you?

hi peeps, looks like I got one too.
Yeah, I haven't gotten as far as the popping stage. . . however, I am a female, so that freaks me out a little. Either way - I am a female, age 34 and just had mine swell up 2 nights ago, it is right at my tailbone. A small skin colored bump showed up about a year ago, but it didn't seem like that big of a deal, so I didn't do anything about it. I was at a yoga class 5 days ago and it swelled up 2 days later. I think rolling on my tailbone area must have agitated it.
It looks like the drainage thing seems to be working for you, but I am going to meet with a surgeon. That is what my doctor recommended. I'll ask a bunch of questions and try to get back to you on anything I find out!
. . .ahh, being human. . . .

Pilonidal cyst
I had a pilonidal cyst removed.
The cyst occurred once and I popped it myself. but it came back months later. they lanced it and packed it with cotton thread to ensure it healed all the way up.
The doc recommended surgery. They told me after the outpatient procedure that it was already filling back up with liquid again.
However, I am left with a HUGE and terrific scar.

Pilonidal Sinus
Hello

I live in Toronto, Ontario.
I had had a pilonidal sinus for many years, and was not sure about it.I had some pain however, and went to see a surgeon, when I was 18 years old, but he said there is no problem. After 6 years, I noticed some drainage, on my underwear, and went to a walk-in clinic, where the surgeon explain what was the problem.I had it removed in january 2009, and it's been like 10 weeks since I had the procedure done, and my wound is still not healed 100%.I was attending a wound clinic every day, the first month, for a wound care, they cleaned it,and packed it, used silver nitrate when necessary, and then I started going every other day after the first four weeks. My doctor, the surgeon actually, reitareted all the time, that it is very important to go for a wound care every day, or it would reoccur, but the nurses at the clinic said that after the wound heals half way, I can go every other day.So now, the pilonidal sinus came back, it is fine partly, but I have to go again, because there are some tunnels formed, and they have to be opened.
I was very persistent going to the very end, took great care of the wound, had a great diet, I did everything what I was asked, and it still didn't heal properly.I assume, it didn't heal from the bottom enough, and the sides touched, so these are the so called tunnels.
So, I was wondering, whether I made a mistake by skipping a day from the clinic, and if that created the problem again. If anyone can explain this.

Thanks

Also, I want to mention, that this thing runs in my family, my dad had an operation when he was 19, and my brother when he was 17.So I think that it is also genetic, some people are more prone to get it.
Another strange thing with me, I had no pain at all, from the day one after the surgery, never took any painkillers or anything like that.

pilonidal wound care
Getting the dressing every other day is fine..as long as the wound is not allowed to close before it heals from inside.

Let it fill with muscles and fat and then let the skin close.

After the skin closes, regular shaving of the area.
Do not go for permanent hair removal.

Please take my advice
I suffered with a pilonidal for 3 years really not knowing what it was...It would drain regularly and was quite embarrassing. I didn't really tell anyone about either. Finally the pain and dis comfort was too much to bare, it was a constant thought, and often bled through my clothes. I did all the home surgery stuff with pins, needles, popping etc etc etc.

I went to a surgeon at Beth Israel in Boston and he informed me that I needed surgery...Let me tell you that this was one of the WORST experiences of my life. I will also note for the record that I played sports my whole life, I boxed, played hockey, mountain biked & skied competitively, etc, etc. I have broken too many bones to list, have a metal plate in my head from a smashed skull, torn ligaments in both knees, broke my nose, collar bone and Jaw...yes I played very hard. I would take any of those injuries over this cyst and the surgery again. I mean this with all sincerity.

If you think you have a pilonidal cyst DO NOT wait...they DO NOT magically get better, in Fact they only get worse and the longer you wait the longer the recovery time and the bigger the procedure.

I had a 3 inch long 2 inch wide incision that could not be stitched...It took a solid 2 months before I could go back to work, and another 3 months after that to completely heal. I had to apply silver nitrate, change dressings 3 times a day, wash and clean an open wound, lay on my side, sit to my side...It really sucks and wouldnt wish it upon ANYONE.

Dont be a tough guy, I never go to the doctor unless I feel Im dying or need a bone fixed...LOL DO NOT mess with a pilonidial....you cant win...Trust me...PLEASE !!!

2nd one
I am on my second pilonidal cyst. The first one was about 10-11 years ago...I had surgery to remove it and it was the worst thing I have ever experienced in my life. It was of course an open wound and was VERY uncomfortable. This time around, I don't have health insurance. I went to my doctor and he put me on an antibiotic and said if it doesn't feel better in a couple days call me. Well it didn't...so I called him...he told me he was refering me to a surgeon...not really something I wanted to hear. It's been a day now and no one has called me regarding any surgery (and it's Friday at 5pm). I've noticed now it's "oozing"...bloody, but no smell...very little is coming out. I'm still taking the antibiotics just to make sure I don't get an infection and it spreads. But my question is... Will it be "ok" if I just let it ooze out? I know my chances of it coming back are good...but for right now, is it ok? How do I take care of it while it's oozing? How do I clean it? What should I watch for? I'm assuming that it not smelling as aweful as my last one is because I have been taking antibiotics for the past 5 days. Can anyone give me a little advise. I really don't want to be stuck in debt with hospital bills for the next 20 years.... Thank you so much!

Never goes away
I am 20 years old and have had this thing since I was about 15 or so almost all through High School, it has stopped me from going in the military, (Army and Air Force) and has basically been a very big pain in the ass (literally). Two days after I turned 18 I had to get surgery for "testicular torsion" and it was hands down the WORST pain of my life. The recovery took forever etc etc, well, I just don't want to have another surgery, have a baby on the way and can not take the time off to have it regardless. I really do hate it though, I suggest if you are young just go ahead with the surgery, it does NOT go away, I am guessing maybe one day I might get the surgery but very unlikely, I have sadly learned to just live with it. MAN IT SUCKS!!!

husband may have pilonidal cyst
today i was watching mystery diagnosis and this condition was mentioned so i thought i would look it up tonight...i really think this is what my husband has, though it's hard to say since he's never let me see it (although i've caught slight glimpses of it poking above his boxers when he's sleeping). he says he can't even remember when he got it. he's never really complained about it hurting ...anyways, he will NOT go to the dr as much as i beg him to b/c he is mostly worried about what might have to be done for it, he does not want to have to take any time off work...it sounds like it may be alot of work to take care of after surgery. i am just wondering if it may be ok to leave as it doesn't really bother him much (although i do notice the discharge occasionally on the bedsheets and his boxers, as well as "crusties" on the back of the toilet ring which i believe is also from this) or is it something that NEEDS to be corrected. he's sleeping right now so i haven't even mentioned i think this is what it is but i'm hoping i might have more info to bring to him tomorrow...

Pilonidal
Every one seems to have a little different story, so here goes my 2 cents.

I developed the first cyst last year in november. I was 20 years old and in the middle of my semester at college. Felt the pain on my tailbone get worse and then realized i had drainage that smelled awful. I went to a doctor on campus who told me he would lance it there and pack it with gauze for a couple of days. So the doc gave me a shot of novocain and did his thing. FYI, when you already have the infection and they drain and scrape it, the novocain does NOT help. That was horrible

Mine came back after 10 months about three weeks ago so i took antibiotics and scheduled a surgery when the infection went down. I had it stitched up for ten days only to have them break open when i sneezed (that sucked and hurt). After that i had to have it packed for a week (which isn't as bad as it sounds if you don't have pain). Now im just waiting for it to close fully, but things are going well.

My advice, take antibiotics to get rid of the infection, (dont just cut and drain hoping that will take care of it) and then find a surgeon you like to remove it fully. You'll have a better chance of staying away from infection post surgery and good chance of taking care of it all together.

This is just so unfortunate for anyone who has to deal with it.

I have a cyst right above my tailbone...sounds the same as what everyone has on here. I am dying in pain. I can't sit or walk or anything. It just feels like a large, hard, bump. What will a doctor do to help?

Pilonodal Cyst
Hi
Just FYI> I got this terrible thing my first when I was 15. I am 57. 3 surgeries and a lot of misery later....
It has flared again. My doctor gave me a serious antibiotic Cipro..It helps in time... But I must admit, the most relief I have had is with Furuncle Med from Leigh and William New Zealand. I still have reoccurences, but with this I can live with it. I have been using it for 5 years. And remember, I am a very experienced user!! 42 years.

Pilnidal cyst
I am a 17 year old female and I'm almost positive this is what I have. About a week ago I felt this small pain right below my tailbone. I thought I had bruised it from the way I sit in desks at school. So I tried to keep the pressure off but it wasn't helping. After a couple days I could not even sit down, it hurt so bad. It became massively swolen, painful, and warm. Finally I noticed a head on it. At this point I thought it was a huge zit that had gone terribly wrong. I got over my embarrassment and had my mom look at it. She thought the same thing. I poked it with a sewing needle and noticed white stuff coming out, like a pimple. I then got a kleenex and attempted to clean it out. That's when it started pouring out green-ish/brown-ish liquid. It smelled terrible. I kept squeezing until nothing would come out anymore. However, it was still very swollen and painful so I knew we weren't done. I had to do it again today with the same thing. I don't exactly want to have surgery but I want this thing gone immediately. I play sports and this whole not-being-able-to-walk business is not acceptable.
