I was hospital last autumn for emergency op due to peritonitus. I assumed this was just my appendix doing what appendixes do ie massive infection (it was removed immediately).
After the op I was told they had to bring in an OB-Gyn surgeon during the op as the surgeon doing the appendectomy found a huge abcess on my ovary (the Gyn surgeon removed it). I was then told I had PID and that an infection had travelled up my fallopian tubes to my ovary and caused the infection/abcess...
Does anyone know: 1. how an abcess on ovary can cause appendicitus/peritonitus?
2. the likelihood this infection was caused by the IUS (Merina 'coil') I had fitted at the time? As opposed to sexually transmitted infection (I've just been diagnosed with Chlamydia).
Any response to those 2 questions really appreciated!
I doubt that the peritnitis and abscess are related. Doctors sometime discover a second, unrelated problem during surgery. Any time they cut into you they give all the surrounding organs and tissues a quick once over to make sure there are no other problems in the patient. The ovarian abscess was caused by PID. The PID could have been caused by chlamydia or Mirena or a combination of the two. "PID occurs when bacteria move upward from a woman's vagina or cervix (opening to the uterus) into her reproductive organs. Many different organisms can cause PID, but many cases are associated with gonorrhea and chlamydia, two very common bacterial STDs... Women who have an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted may have a slightly increased risk of PID near the time of insertion compared with women using other contraceptives or no contraceptive at all. However, this risk is greatly reduced if a woman is tested and, if necessary, treated for STDs before an IUD is inserted." (cdc.gov)
Thank you for this. Helpful to know the appendix incident unrelated to abcess on ovary. re Q 2, I had been tested for chlamydia (negative) a few months before Merina IUD put in, but I guess I could have picked it up in the time between that test and Merina inserted. Perhaps as you say the PID was caused by one or both, I guess I won't ever know. But no more Merina/IUD allowed, condoms only from now on
