Q: Physical therapy
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 20th, 2008
I have been dealing with this pain in my back and neck since Jan. after an injury which caused a compression fracture of L1. On my last doctors visit he told me that my back was at 35%. Then sent me to PT. I have been doing PT since 4/7. They have done some painful manipulations of my spine and neck and some excercises, but I have seen no improvement and usually leave feeling worse. My next doctors appointment is 5/16. How long do I have to go through this before someone does something to relieve my pain? Is it safe for me to be in PT with my fracture still not healed?

Physical therapy is important to achieve faster rehabilitation and to prevent secondary complications from the fracture. Unfortunately, pain from fractured vertebra can last for years.

If the height of the fractured vertebra’s body is decreased for more than 50% compared to the vertebral body from above, surgical intervention may be necessary. Surgical intervention is usually done whenever the fracture is not stable or there are neurological symptoms.

You may want to consult an orthopedist about your condition.
