Hi everyone,

I have a yeast infection - I'm sure it is one, as I've had them a few times before... I seem to be prone (ugh!). My family doctor knows this, and has even prescribed me the pill thing in advance in the past for it when I'm on an antibiotic (as a precaution - so I don't have to go back once the antibiotic inevitably gives me one), and once when I was away at school and really prone she gave me a prescription to keep "on file" for when I needed it so I didn't have to go to the school's clinic (which takes a week to get an appointment).

HOWEVER I now live an 8 hour drive from my family doctor (and didn't think to ask her for a prescription for this when I moved 8 months ago, as it's been about a year and a half since I had one), and the walk-in here is only open a few days a week, AND during the work day (I work full time) and it's honestly like a 3 hour wait - I can't leave work to go (we're short staffed right now).

I tried Monistat again last month for it, and it seemed to clear it up for like 2 1/2 weeks but the YI is back (this is usually the case with me - the Canestin/Monistat doesn't work and it rebounds worse a few weeks later) but the Monistat-type cures also BURN like crazy and make it worse - like an unbearable pain and CRAZY itchiness/burning. I ended up washing it off last time the first night because I couldn't handle it it was so bad (I was in tears).

I've been trying to call my Dr to see if I can get a prescription transferred up here, but for 2 days now the office is not answering their phone (this is typical). I am in absolute agony - swollen labia (on and off), burning, itching, redness, dryness, and the skin is cracking as well. I've been using vagisil - which helps with the itching - but it's not curing anything.

What other solutions are there?? Is there anything else over-the-counter I can try? "Natural" remedies? I'll try anything at this point! I tried going to the nurse practitioner sexual health clinic but they said they'd have to do a swab (oh, did I mention it's also that time of the month as of today?) and it would be at MINIMUM a week before results came back, and then they'd have to make a Dr. appt for me to get the prescription.

Help help help!!!

Hello,

Welcome to the ehealthforum and I am really glad to help you out. Candidiasis is caused by the overgrowth of yeast-like fungi called Candida. When the balance of naturally occurring organisms in the vagina is disrupted an overgrowth of Candida can occur. Take some precautionary measures like avoid wearing tight fitting clothing like jeans and pantyhose and underwear made from synthetic fibres. Remove wet or damp bathing suits immediately after swimming, avoid douching, perfumed soaps, bubble baths and toiletries, change underwear daily, wash underwear in hot water (to destroy fungi) and double rinse (to remove any irritating detergent) and take adequate nutrition and sleep.

Also use some antifungal pessaries like clotrimazole , miconazole or nystatin which are available over the counter. If still the symptoms persist then oral antifungals may be needed. Please consult a gynecologist in that case. Also then get a cervical swab done to rule out other genital infections.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care.
