Q: Persistent swollen tonsil

I have had a swollen right tonsil for over 2 years. It generally doesn't hurt but often gets irritated and becomes sore. I went to see an ENT and he suggested having them removed but I was trying to avoid this if possible. Does anyone know what may be the cause of the constant inflammation?
