Q: Permanent health insurance rider?

About 5 years ago I started having back pain at night when I sleep. At the time I had complete coverage from Pacificare. They did some MRI's and found a slightly bulging disc in L4 of my spine. The Doctor who diagnosed me put in my medical record that I have pain of a 10 out of 10 at most times of the day. My pain comes only when lying in bed and I don't know why he put that "I'm in pain all dayand night"in my records. I recieved one session of facet injection which got rid of the pain for about one and a half months. Over that one and a half month period Pacificare dropped all individual health insurance plans. I found myself looking for new insurance and all the sudden was denied by Blue Cross and Cigna. United healthcare accepted me but put a permanent rider on any coverage having to do with my spine. Now for the last several years I have been reduced to taking pain pills and muscle relaxers before I go to bed. Now my doctor wants me to sign some pain management contract and take drug tests!! All I want is some relief that is not in pill form. Is a permanent rider a common practice for just having back pain? I have not been diagnosed with any type of spine disease. Does anyone have any advice on what I could do to get full coverage again? This health insurance nightmare has become way more painful than the backpain itself. I'm only 35 years old and I just want to stop taking these pills and live a normal life again.

Medical plans
I was once denied coverage because of past problems. I then found a discount medical plan that covers all services with no wait time. I even get discount on my vision, prescription and chiropractic services.

Similar rider concerns but currently insured
I am 44 years old and my wife's 45. I have private insurance that I've had for decades, but is really horrible (no meds paid for, no well-care or preventative care, large deductible PER ILLNESS, etc.) I am looking for new health insurance but I'm currently diabetic. Further, due to poor aftercare post elective (sort of) surgery on her abdomen, my wife had a pulmonary embolism. Now I'm faced with two HUGE riders on any new plan, even an HSA-related one, and I'm concerned that ANYTHING catastrophic that happens to me, which would be covered by my current plan, will be related to the diabetes (non-insulin dependent type-II under control with diet & medication) and not covered, wiping me out financially. The only thing I can think of, for your case at least, is if you can find someone willing to do the surgery/procedures necessary to fix rather than just treat the pain from the problem and see if they'll work with you on the price, then save up towards it. But from what I can see, not only will you never have full coverage again, even the coming "reforms" (God help us all) won't fix this (or any other) health insurance related problem.
