Q: Period While On Birth Control

I'm on the Birth Control shot, and I got my one every three months shot a few weeks ago. My problem is... I'm having my period, and that's not supposed to happen for another 2 months or so. I'm seriously freaking out. Is the birth control not working?? I'm so scared. Because the only reason I'm on birth control is because my cramps were so bad that I'd have seizures and pass out. So, it lightens my period and prevents me from having seizures from cramps. I'm afraid that there's something wrong. What should I do?

Years ago I took the Depo shot for birth control. I still had my period every month. In fact up until recently I did not know women didn't get their period on the shot because that was something I never experienced.

When I doubt call or go back to the doctor about your concerns.

Irregular bleeding is pretty common for the depo shot. You're still protected, but your body just isn't used to the hormones yet.

If it becomes a problem, then you should talk with your doctor.

I'm assuming that you mean the Depo-provera shot. Different people react differently to this form of birth control. I still had periods/ spotting for the first six months that I was on it. Since then I've had no bleeding but occassional cramping. For others it takes longer for their periods to cease. For some, one shot is all it takes. So I wouldn't worry too much. But if it really bothers you, by all means call your doctor. It's better to be safe than sorry.
