I haven't had a period since December. I've had an exam since this and it showed atrophy. I was given some vaginal cream. My question is, it is evident that I am going through menopause. However, since it has been so long that I had a period (six months), I am having one now. Is that normal ? I am having cramps, plus a week or so ago, I had some discharge which is one of the symptoms I used to have a week before my periods, (back when I had them regularly). Again, is it normal to have a period six months into menopause?

Periods are caused by hormones. It is quite possible that your hormone levels can be fluctuating. You still have enough unreleased eggs to ovulate if the hormone levels are right.

Menopause is seldom an on/off switch for ovulation and menstruation. It becomes more and more irregular until it stops.
