Q: Period or withdrawal bleeding ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 3rd, 2009
Hello there.
I came off the pill Micrygynon 30 on the 6th September (half way through the packet) i had my withdrawal bleed as normal, then 28 days later had a period (or so i thought) another couple of week passed and i'm bleeding again for days, so i figured this was my normal period and the bleeding i had 28 days after the pill was still part of the pills cycle, another week later and there is blood in my discharge.
Could you please tell me what it is? Was the bleed i had 28 days after coming off the pill my real period or just another withdrawal bleed? or was the bleed two week after that bleed my real period? and if so why is there blood in my discharge at the minute? Is it ovulation or just my hormones playing up?
Thanks a lot.

Hello and welcome to eHealth Forum!

Once you come off a birth control pill that you have been taking for sometime, and left in between, then hat first you have withdrawal bleeding. This is often followed by irregular periods for 2-3 months during which your body settles down to a cycle without the effect of the hormones of the pill.

If the cycle does not settle within 2-3 months then other causes of irregular menses such as high cholesterol, anemia, hormonal imbalance, highly stressful life, chain smoking, and dramatic changes in life style (stopping pill can be one such change too), polycystic disease of the ovary or PCOS and fibroid uterus have to be ruled out.

Please consult your doctor or gynecologist and get yourself examined as a confirmed diagnosis cannot be given on net. Hope this helps. Take care!
