Q: pelvic fracture recovery

Feb 29-08 I was thrown off my horse onto a dirt road ad sustained 3 fractures of my ramus, two on left with one displaced and one on right with a hairline fracture of the ilium. It has been 10 weeks and I still cannot walk unassisted. Last week the xray showed healing, but the displaced area looked like a small jigsaw puzzle. How long is this going to take. I pushed myself for days, bought a recumbent bike, did stretches, great for my mental health, but it created too much pain. My ortho MD told me I am not ready for PT, but it takes 8 weeks for a bone to heal. I am otherwise healthy with no bone issues. I am mostly in the wheelchair after pushing on the crutches which creates butt pain, burning and left groin pain. How can I speed this healin!!!

There is no way you can speed up the bone fracture healing. The most important thing for bone fracture healing is the stability of the bone fragments. Fractures of the pubic rami are usually stable, don't need internal fixation and heal faster. Complete resolution of the symptoms of a pelvic fracture usually requires 6-12 months.

That is not what I wanted to hear, but I appreciate the truth. I thought I was being a whimp...with a limp. I suppose the constant discomfort keeps me from getting my energy level back and creates the nausea I so often get. I take minimal tylenol and aleve.
I don't know how to channel my mental energy!! I can only read and watch TV so much. Boo Hoo, Life is really good and I am grateful for the fact that in 6 to 12 months I will be OKAY!!!!

Channeling mental energy is quite a challenge. You'll have to first figure out WHERE you want to direct your thoughts. Maybe it's a good time to do some of those things that you've always wanted to do ... like learn a new language or a new skill. Do you have the resources to pay someone to teach you something? Are you into meditation at all?

I practice THE SECRET which is positive thinking on steroids, but since this has happened I don't seem to be able to apply it to the broken me. I don't know why. I mostly go around angry which is not me. Meditation may help, any good resources? I am going to learn Spanish and when I am back at work I am returning to get my advanced degree...job pays for some of it. I am blocking myself mentally...thanks for helping me figure that out...why? Got any ideas?

The Law of Attraction is very much at work in the universe! Well, I think that any kind of extreme pain in the body is very difficult! It doesn't necessarily have to be "caused" by anything, it's just something that we have to process. I think that the mental block in terms of positive thinking may simply be a human way of dealing with pain and disappointment. A great meditation resource is the Institute for Applied Meditation. They teach a heart rhythm meditation that has helped me tremendously with chronic depression and despair. But it's one of those things--- I've found that I have to practice it daily to have real effect. Yoga also helps me...yogatoday dot com offers free daily classes, but I think that you'll have to wait a while b/c it's quite physical and reliant on foot balances.

Do those suggestions help?

Yes! You helped me get on track. I pulled out THE SECRET on Friday and I am back on track!!! Thank you so much! I wouldn't do it alone, but with you I did it. I am 85% better than I was when I wrote this a few days ago. It is AMAZING what positive thinking and creative visualization can do. I cannot thank you enough!!!!

That is so good to hear. That movie is very inspiring. Have you made a vision board? I have ... and am watching some of those things come into being. For example, the garden is greener this year than ever before. My health and wellness is at an all time high. And I'm watching my income grow. Surround yourself in what you want ... and attract those things to yourself. Good luck, cherroxrobbin! And let us know how your recovery is going. What's the news this week?

I have THE SECRET movie and book for that hard copy feel that I am used to. Lov it. Oh, yes I have a wish board. It is such a happy way to live. I wish I had sought my reference for life sooner than I did with this injury. I have not practiced this philosophy long enough for my bad habits to be gone...soon.

This week I am able to "walk" in the morning without the crutches. It is a strange gait, but I am pleased!!! I cannot overdo because my body screams and I get faint and nauseated...okay so I push myself a little okay a lot, but if I am not I am miserable...goals, goals goals. I have a great job waiting for me, but I am not sure how much longer they will wait...ooh, need to put it on my wish board.

I never thought a forum would keep me in the positive. thanks to you, too.

It is really neat having your energy care. I will let you know if I need more support, but I am pushing and pushing to get my legs strong and a normal gait will come with time. Walking is so wonderful!!!!
I am waiting to hear from THE JOB. She told me they would wait for me a few weeks ago, but I think my eta at the job is going to be 2 weeks longer than anticipated. Luckily I can find a job anywhere, but I want this one.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!
Hugs!!!!!

They are waiting for me to be their case manager. I ordered my books from amazon.com on community clinic case management. I am ready mentally, but after taking three steps forward I have taken one step back. It seems this whole healing process is like that. I would seemingly make no progress for weeks and then I could get out of bed or some such leap. WOOO HOOO, life is good. Tomorrow will be another leap day...this happened on leap day!!!

So is this a community medical clinic or perhaps mental health clinic? Sounds like a very challenging job, no matter what!

It is a community medical clinic which is planning on treating psych patients in the future. My first 15 or so years of nursing was in the mental health field which I loved at that time so I will be comfortable with that aspect. I will not be doing direct pt care, but following up with their follow up and goodness knows what else.

This clinic is owned by the hospital in this community so that I will have job security. I prefer not to work for free standing clinics of any sort. They don't pay as well in this area either.

Are you a yoga instructer or devout practitioner?

Cool. It sounds like you really know what you want.

I practice and teach yoga asana. Thanks for asking. My teachers were both self-taught ... and I really believe it's 99% practice, 1% theory. I waver in frequency of "time on the mat" but always come back to it. It's the only practice that allows me to get out of my head and I really need it for sanity! I'm serious. It's a must. So, I've been playing around for about 5 years now. It's wonderful! Thank goodness for the yogis and yoginis who came before!

respect

Have you attempted any mind-body practice?

I did yoga in my twenties and was quite flexible which I know longer am. I never learned to quiet my mind at that time. I am reading Eckhart Tolle's book THE POWER OF NOW. It is packed with info just in one sentence so I have my highlighter and stickies to mark the most awesome info that I need. I can learn to quiet my mind if I practice his philosophy.
Keep in touch!

I think that whatever path you choose, just stick to it. The problem with the "new age" is that there's a tendency to waver. At least, that's what I did for a while. I was trying all sorts of things that I didn't really get into just one thing to get deep enough. That's also what I've heard yoga teachers say. Stick to it! In the end, the mind will be tamed. Smile

I went back to work today with an easy day of hospital orientation. Very exciting to be back and the people seem exceptional. Tomorrow I start at the community clinic. WOOO HOOOOO. My mind was quite cooperative the entire time. Awesome!!!

I am still uncomfortable and walk with a slight limp, but nothing can stop me. We have bills to pay and the health insurance costs are extremely high and come close to being impossible. We have to wait three months for the new insurance to kick in. Good things are happening here.

Hi Cher, That's great to hear. You mention walking with a limp. I've heard that applying weight to bone can help heal a fracture. What does your doctor say? Are you going to have to be very mobile for the job?
