Q: pelvic exam revealed trichomonas

A recent pelvic exam performed for internal and external vaginal itching and foul odor revealed a diagnosis of trichomonas. A prescription for Flagl was prescribed with a followup appointment in a week to update results for testing for other possible std\'s. No other information was given about the contracting of this condition. Upon searching the topic on the internet I came across an article that stated that this organism can be passed from one person to another also by the use of handtowels, washcloths to clean the private members, etc. which has now raised further questions. Are there any measures that need to be taken in regards to the cleaning of all towels, washcloths, worn undergarments, bedclothes, etc. such as the use of bleach in order to prevent the passing of this organism to one another again while being treated with the antibiotics? How long after completing the antibiotic treatment does one need to wait before being retested to be sure the condition is completely treated? Are there any other measures, issues, considerations that need attention? Does the bathroom toilets need to be cleaned with a particular type of product in order to kill these organisms? Does such a product exist?

Extremely eHealthy
Oral treatment with Flagyl is very effective one for Trichomonas vaginalis infection.
Usually, there is no need for retesting for this infection after completing the treatment and diminishing of symptoms.
Repeat testing is performed when symptoms do not improve with drug treatment.
If you are interested in control testing, it is recommended at 5-7 and 30 days.
The rates of cure with Flagyl are much higher when the partner is treated at the same time, and when sexual activity is avoid until both of the partners are free of symptoms and the therapy is completed.
If the treatment fails, you may require a higher dose metronidazole regimen or the use of a different nitroimidazole.
T.vaginalis is a small parasite that can really survive for some hours outside the body on infected objects, but, it can be transmitted only by sharing them.
So, it is important to practice safe sex, avoid sharing towels, washcloths that has been used already, clean the toilet seat more frequently, avoid seating at the toilet seat in public restroom.
There is no need for special measures for cleaning towels and bedclothes.
It is important just to be clean and not contaminated with infective body fluids.

Best wishes!
