I am 49, had a radical hysterctomy almost 24 months ago. Mant years with no ins, I suffered through endo I found, and the cancer was a relief. My incision was 4 inches across the abdomen. My Specialist would not perform laproscopy for some reason, and encouraged me to remove everything, or I would be back. I agreed. I worked out on toning tables every day for 1 1/2 hours to build my core to recover quickly. It helped, but 4 weeks into it, my baby grandson leaped at me across the table, I had to catch him..ever since, I had a sharp shooting pain in lower left abdomen, and it basically has been numb and hard since. My brother, with many back surgeries said to massage the area, it helped. I went and did biomedical hormones with my pharmacist, along with viva dot (?) I felt better mentally and started working out on toning tables again. I noticed I cant work the leg machine the same, I have to bicycle. It was not easy, as with any workout, I envisioned the pain source to be from that, after the initial week, I have been able to maintain the weight level I lost to after my surgery...I do pee alot more often, can't lay in bed awake (my husband is thrilled I get up early now), and I hurt for 2 weeks after the new one-year old has been here for 3 days..it's worth the pain, b/c I can't stand to have someone tell me I can't do something Smile take care, have a blessed day, and keep trying to find a solution that works for you!!

I am in PAIN and IT STARTED 1 YEAR AFTER MY HYSTERECTOMY, I HAD LOW BACK PAIN AND ANKLE PAIN,and CONSTIPATION , it certainly started out very slow, but evencually got so bad I can no longer function like a normal person, I am 49 yrs old, and feel like i am 89 when i get out of bed,

my whole body hurts when i first wake up, but as the day goes by it is mostly my ankles and back that kill me,

I can not have SEX because that too is now hurting me for some reason, it did not hurt this much 2 years ago,

When it first started it was only mild, in the morning after getting out of bed, I noticed my ankles and lower back would feel funny, as the years went on it's now 5ys...... I am not able to work or do my normal activity's any more

I noticed I had allot of numbness in my legs the first 2 years but that has stopped, I can no longer have SEX it is so PAINFULL and I was noticed I got constipated when it first started, now everything is 25 x worse.

my whole life I used to get very bad cramps on the first day of my menstraul cycle then after I delivered my 3rd child I noticed my legs mainly my ankles, only hurt instead of getting cramps, and that continued for `15 yrs.

it was more in my ankles this pain, I couldnt do anything the whole day because of that pain,

this is what might be confusing my doctor, they tell me that adhesions would not do this to me, , I used to get bad cramps, but all that stopped many years ago and it only affected my legs,

I feel this is the same pain that I had with my cycle every month except it is so much worse, and getting more severe every year that passes.
I don't understand why I had so much numbness in my legs a few years ago but it went away, maybe the scar tissue is moving things around ...

I used to feel less constipated when i was able to have intercourse a few years ago, as if that moved something around for a few days,

I don't understand why I am having so much pain in my vagina, i want to scream during a pap test,

something is wrong, and doctors should help people, I am on 2 fentanyl patches, 100mg and a 50 mg, i also need morphine 3 x a day and i use brake thru med's too.

I lost 20 pounds a few years ago because my primary care dropped me and shut me of from the few pain med's he was giving me, he no longer believed I was in pain, I couldnt cook or clean my home at all because of this pain

I am grateful to my new primary care, I dont know if I would be alive today, I was so depressed when i had no doctor, and I was in severe pain. still i can not due what i need to do sleeping even hurts, sitting bothers my legs too.

if anybody has my symptoms please reply

thankyou Sandfish

Hello sandfish, OMG!! I read your story and my heart is broken for you. I am in pain all the time and tonight I felt I was at the end of what I could handle. I did not know how I could wake up another die and live this life. I think I have adhesions from my hysterectomy too and the pain is so bad I can't take it anymore. I am so grateful for your post because if you can hang on with the pain you have, after being abandoned by your GP and losing the pain meds you so desperately need, then I too can hold on. I hope you get this post because I want to know how you are doing today. I pray that your situation has improved. Please post an update. Praying for you.

Wow I thought I was the only women with these problems I almost feel lucky now after reading everyones post. I had my hysterectomy about 5 years ago and was left with the cervix and one overary. I am very active doing triathlons and working out about 15 to 20 hours per week. But after my last ironman on nov. I started to have regular periods bleeding for at least three days and having a lot of pain. I have also had terrible bloating and having trouble going to the bathroom. My stomach gurggles all the time and energy is at a all time low. Went to the doctor today and have a surgery planned for next Thursday to get my cervix removed and take a look at that ovary I am wondering if I should have him check for scar tissue also. Working out can be tough but.I am still able to do it should I even have the surgery. I make my living at triathlons wondering what to do now help

Scar tissue can cause allot of pain, I have seen allot of information about women having problems after there hysterectomy, I am not sure if that is causing my pain, I feel it is but there is no guaranty my doctor told me, I seen this happen to my Dad, he had lung Cancer and they took of part of his lung, about 8 months later, his lung was filling up with liquid, his surgeon told him he either has the Cancer back or has adhesions, and luckily he did have scar tissue, they removed it and he has been doing great for 5 years. He happens to be a red head, I heard they can scar more than most people, I have the red headed gene , from him and I have a red headed child, I never knew a hysterectomy could cause scar tissue, and I accually hope i am suffering from it, I will have a diagnostic laprascopy in a few months. good luck to you doctor

Adhesions after Hysterectomy
Hi, I had a total abdominal hysterectomy nearly 8 months ago and did all the things I was told about slowly building up my stamina with gentle exercise and did go back to work but was still getting pain around and below my scar.
After a couple of weeks at this level the pain started to get worse especially after any form of physical exercise. After several trips to my doctor (who's been brilliant) she now thinks that I have alot of abdominal adhesions. I am going into hospital for a scan on 10th March to confirm her diagnosis and if she's right then it might mean another operation to sort these out - joy...not. Still in a way I hope that is what I have and that they can get these sorted because I need to get my normal life back and be able to do the things I used to do. I'll keep you posted as to my progress and if there is anyone out there who's had the op for adhesions I'd be interested to see how it went.

I just had to put my two cents in after reading about what all these other women are going through. I just had my hysterectomy( uterus only) on 2/16/11 and now I'm having the worst pain in my lower stomach ever. I know I'm still healing and still fresh on the recovery path but I'm wonder if I am having the same problem.I am 33yrs old I've had 3 C-section, laproscopy, D&C, Thermal ablation for my heavy cycles. So after all that didn't work the TAH was my last choice. My doc already told I have major scar tissue. My Stomach, tubes, bladder all look like one organ( her words)Now right after the surgery I didn't have a b/m for a week. I was having some trouble so i used a laxative. Now every time I go to the bathroom I have a b/m. I'm sorry to sound graphic but my stool is blood red, and I'm having a discharge of the same color.I'm back to wearing pads again. i just want to see if what I'm starting to experience is the beginning of what all these other women are going through. i will keep you posted as I begin to search for answers. Please keep me in your prayers.

Vaginal sprain
Hi Ladies,
I had a lapriscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy on 12/15/10 for multiple fibroids. The day after my surgery I was in horrible pain and could not walk the nurses and dr. kept telling me that it was gas pain. ( I know what gas pain feels like and that wasn't it.) I was in the hospital for 4 days in pain before another GYN Dr ( not mine she still thought it was gas) told me that I had a sprained vagina which is rare but can happen with a vaginal hysterectomy. So I had to start wearing an abdominal band to HOLD EVERYTHING STILL. After they diagnosed me with the sprain they kept me a few more hours and sent me home. So I was recovering from surgery and a sprained vagina.
My Dr has never heard of this type of sprain and here I am almost 3 months later and I can't sit for long periods of time, it hurts to pee, have a BM, pass gas, walk around for a long time, sneeze and cough. I have been on vicodin since surgery I try not to take it and I am doubled over in pain holding myself. My dr told me is that this is very rare and now she wants me to go to physical therapy. Has anyone else have anything like this?

Oh my gosh I am so happy to find this site and know that I am not "imaging" my pain. I hade all my female parts taken out in 2008. Prior to that I had about 6 laposcopys to remove cyst from my overies and then had 2 eptopic pregnancys then more cyst and Dr told me if I kept trying to get pregnant it would kill me so I gave in and let him take it all. I thought that would end my 20 or so years of pain. Not. Last year I started having bad pelvic pain and Dr went in to see what was going on. Scar tissue adhesions real bad, he had to move my bowls out of the way to remove them all. Now one year later I have real bad pelvic pain again. No insurance and when I go to the ER they treat me like I am just seeking pain meds because they cannot "see" anything that is wrong. I am so frustrated, I gave up my chances of having a baby to be out of pain and I am still in pain. I cannot get in to see a Dr for another month so in the mean time I guess I just have to suffer. Thanks for letting me share, its nice to know I am not alone in my pain.

Ladies
I went on this site to find info on scar tissue after hysterectomy. I'm just 3 weeks post op. Still have my ovaries. The "bikini" scar I have has at least 3 hard lumps under the skin. I'm assuming it's scar tissue. Once I feel comfortable enough, should I start to massage the lumps to break up the tissue? I'm getting nervous and scared by all the posts on here.

Thank you ladies for all the information now I know I am not insane. I had a hysterectomy and kept 1 ovary 3 years later I started to have pain in the good overay side. I went o my obgyn and she suggested removal. The surgery that was supposed to take 30 minutes took 4 hours. I never felt the same . 2 years ago I kept having pain in the place where the overy had been. I went to the dr she ignroed me told me nothing was there for me to have pain. I went to another Dr. and she agreed to check me out in a surgery she found a hard growth that was attached to adhesions. When the growth was removed I felt fine. Now 1 year later, I am having severe pain in the same area I had a internal ultra sound and the tech told me she saw a cysts she would give my results to the Dr. that was Tuesday I have not heard from the dr. after several calls I called today and the office was closed (derby time). I double over in pain and today I thought I was going to die something is wrong. Has anyone had cysts on scar tissue or adhesions?

post hysterectomy
I am so glad to not be alone here! My pain started in 98 with three exploratory surgeries showing endometriosis. Finally in 2008 they took my uterus but left the ovaries. No relief of pain at all. March this year they took my right ovary which was completely encapsulated and adhesions had formed around my bowel and was actually killing my appendix. I had many complications post op. And here I am again the pain never went away. My gyn sent me to a GI specialist for scope nothing there, he refers me back to Gyn who says deal with it. It has so damaged my life function, I just want to have some pain relief. It is excruciating pain runs down my buttocks and leg. But my Gyn is scared of pain management and no health insurance do to job loss from all of this makes it even harder. Not sure what to do!

I too have had a radical hysterectomy for endometrial cancer and it resulted in a great deal of nerve pain, abdominal pain and swelling.I also had lymph nodes removed, so have the complication of lymphedema. I couldn't figure out what was wrong at first, but with the aid of a great massage therapist, I found help. I have learned that abdominal adhesions are tremendously painful and common after surgery, as they are like a net growing and tightening over nerves, organs, tissue, etc. I found my massage therapist through the physical therapy clinic I was referred to after surgery. He massages the adhesions to break them up, much like you would massage a sore muscle to loosen it up. Since adhesions are tissue, you cannot see them differentiated on an ultra sound, xray or MRI. All you see is tissue. But they are real and can damage organs by constricting (typically intestines become constricted and cause blockages) besides causing tremendous pain. The pain people are talking about could be the pain of the adhesions pressing on organs, or the pain of an adhesion pressing on nerves. The inflamed nerves can radiate to other parts of the body, down the leg, into the vagina, up into the chest. Obviously you have to rule out other possible causes of the pain, but if it is adhesions, look for a certified massage therapist or physical therapist who knows how to manage adhesions. Surgery can cut the adhesions but you then risk more adhesions from that surgery.
I hope this is helpful!

Endometrioid Adenocarcinoma and Hysterectomy
I am 3 1/2 weeks postop for a radical Hysterectomy, with uterus ovaries and tubes removed. My surgeon was originally planning a DaVinci procedure, and found after insertion of the scope in the naval, that I was so full of adhesions, from serveral other abdominal surgeries, that Davinci was impossible. To his credit, he took alot of time, removing old adhesions, and then had to do a bikini incision and open me for the surgery, Spent 5 days in the hospital, and am now on a 6 week short term disability leave from my job. Ever since the external staples were removed (8 days postop) I have experienced burning, stinging AWFUL pain under the right side of my incision. The doc says it's normal, but it is getting worse. Hard to move on that side. Could this already be new adhesions, or do I need to just give it more time to heal. The incision on the right side where the pain is, is closed and healing. The left side of the incision still has small open area, but is healing slowly. Sure am glad I ran across this site. What's the consensus?

I can not give enough thanks for these posts. I have been suffering for 2.5 years with chronic pain. I had a hysterectomy in 2002 and when they preformed it my bladder was adhered to my uterus, so I have a history of adhesions. When my journey started, they were certain the pain was gynological. I had a lap.surgery to look at my ovaries for adhesions but the ovaries were healthy. The Dr. did find adhesions on my bowels but did not want to mess with them.

I went to a urologist, saw a pelvic pain specialist for months until Kaiser got tired of paying for my care and ended our coverage in a sneaky way of course. So for the past year and a half I've been just relying on pain management. At times the pain would be so bad I would go to the ER. Sometimes they did ultrasounds or CT scans (when I was insured) and then they would just give me a shot of dilaudid and send me home.

I was in such pain a couple weeks ago I just couldn't handle it anymore. I seriously was contemplating which was worse, the pain I was causing my family because of being bedridden and not being Mom vs. chosing to euthanize myself. My mom was so tired of seeing me suffer she even drove over and took me into the ER, this time a different one where they just said "We don't handle chronic pain" and sent me home.

For some reason I googled hysterectomy and adhesions and found this MB. Just reading the posts I was blown away by how spot on they were to exactly what I was going through. I couldn't put it in words any better. So when last Mon. it was beyond bearable I decided to go to the community hospital and instead of telling them I had pelvic pain I said I knew I had adhesions on my colon and that I thought they were causing an obstruction. I figured they couldn't send me home then.

I was right, thank God. They did some imaging, but didn't see anything. However they did have me meet with a surgeon who contemplated doing exploratory surgery by lap. He was hesitant and warned me about reoccurance. Also they kept asking if we were sure since we are uninsured. I would mortgage my house, declare bankruptcy, whatever it would take to get some answers, as well as my husband.

So Friday they performed the surgery. It turned out that my colon had adhered to my ovary. I had been using a tens unit for pain and had sores from over use on both my front and back. Right where my ovary would be in the front and the kidney in the back. The Dr. said he could have put a needle straight through those sores and it would have hit exactly where the adhesion was. He repaired it and is confident that it should not reoccur.

I can't even put into words how estatic I am. I am a whole new person. I have been bed ridden 80% of the time since xmas and now the pain is completely gone. I had hundreds of people praying for me and although I'm not religious I certainly believe in the power of prayer, moreso now. I went home the next day and have been so happy and enjoying life again. The hardest part is taking it easy so it doesn't reoccur. I just want to make up for all the lost time. When leaving the hospital I cried tears of joy the whole way home, knowing I could return to my role as a mother and wife. Our sex life was very limited due to the pain and that really took a toll on both of us. I mean, sometimes you need that release and just the bond that it creates was missing.

I can not say thank you enough for sharing your stories. They saved my life. I still have fibromyalgia but after going through this I even have a new positive attitude about dealing with it. I'm on cloud 9 and just had to share my story.

I am so glad that i am not going crazy i thought i was alone in all of this that no one had this much pain ever. I had a hysterectomy 2007 and now i have so much pain that i am on pain meds for the rest of my life. The doctors are talking about me having a surgery to take out the scar tissue. I am scared about it, they say that it will just keep coming back so it is either i go through with it or i sit in pain all day 24/7 if there is anything i can do to make the pain feel better without surgery i would be happy to try anything that i can

I had my partial hysterectomy 5 years ago and have started getting period type pains !
So glad I'm not the only one, been to doctors and have had a blood sample and urine test done, just waiting for the results !
I was told after my op that I might have problems with my ovaries in the future and might have to have them out at a later date, told the doctor this and he dismissed it! Will let you all know how I get on
