Q: Pediatric gallbladder removal
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 25th, 2009
Is is unusual for a 14 yr. old to have gall bladder disease and removal?
We are seeing a pediatric surgeon. I am very nervous since he has not done many of these surgeries. I was told a pediatric surgeon has to do it since she is only 14. I was also told that he is an excellent surgeon, however, it still makes me nervous. Is it common procedure for another surgeon to be in the OR with the pediatric surgeon?

Gallbladder Disease Answer A6130
Gallbladder diseases (gallstones and gallbladder dyskinesia, most commonly) are far more common in adults, but may also be seen in adolescents and pre-teens, especially among certain ethnic groups, and in obese kids. It is, of course, impossible for me to render a diagnosis or an opinion for patients who I have never personally examined. However, assuming that your daughter does require a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a well-trained general surgeon who is confortable treating adolescents might be your best best.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Wascher, MD, FACS
