Q: Passing out as a symptom of epilepsy
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 24th, 2008
Are these symptoms of epilepsy? If so, what sort of seizures are they? Wake in middle of night. Building process: wake nauseous, begin getting hotter & hotter, very thirsty, try to get to toilet. Sometimes I vomit, sometimes lose bowel control then I pass out for a couple seconds. Afterwards cold & tired, just want to sleep. Passed out off stairs (only toilet is downstairs) & the last time off of the toilet where my husband found me we don't know how long later. I remember coming in and out, even showering to remove blood coming from my head. Had stitches in my head and a concusion. Happening now for 25 years. I've been tested for everything including: hypoglycemia, hyperventilation, astma, possible heart relation dismissed by Cardiologist. Passed out while wearing a heart monitor with no results. I've been tested for hypoglycemia in the middle of a passing out event. The last few years I've found the connection with alcohol makes it worse although also occuring without alcohol.

Epilepsy Answer A4751
Current medical status: Possible epilepsy and/or seizures?
Current medical treatment: EEG and seconde EEG with sleep deprivation. Waiting for MRI.

Passing out could be due to epilepsy but that needs to be proven with an EEG.

You may want to consult a neurologist about your sudden passing out.

Not sure if you've sorted this out or not as it was a while ago.

I have had 3 "seizures" 2 of which were related to alcohol. Doctors told me they were environmental (not enough sleep, alcohol, anxiety related). So i was put on anti-depression meds (efexor-xr). This didn't help me in the least.

1st seizure...fair enough i'd had alot to drink, and it was the next day i was nauseous (as expected) and bloated. Had diarrhoea symptoms, and then seized in my car....luckily wasn't going anywhere.
Tests showed nothing.
2nd time, only 2 beers. Same feelings the next day and i made it from one end of the house, to the bathroom to wash my face, to the other end of the house without knowing i was doing it, and collapsed on the floor and seized.
tests showed nothing again. Full blood tests, epilepsy (eeg, mri's etc) liver function...whatever...even had endoscopy and colonoscopy to check out my guts for anything GERD like...100% physically healthy i was!

3rd time later after 3 years seizure-free, i was watching a movie and felt the familiar warning signs...then bang. had another one. No drinking involved at all as it makes my guts bloat up straight away. so off to the specialist again...this time i had some drinks the night before my eeg to try and get worst case scenario happening. and what do you know. They finally picked up I have epilepsy! Also turned out a majority of the times i was sick (bloated/nauseous/dizzy etc.) were mini-seizures.

Now on epilim medication for epilepsy. Just have to treat my anxiety somehow. (going 7 years with ppl telling you you're healthy when you know you aren't has an effect on your head after a while!).

Apparently the tests only pick up epilepsy 4 times out of 10.

Whether this is what you have or not...? Sounds somewhat similar to what i had though. Worth mentioning to your doctor to get a referral to a neuro specialist.
