Why is it necessary to pass gas following surgery. My friend just had surgery for a tumor in the colon, and she is fine, but cannot leave the hospital until she passes gas. She has not had a thing to eat or drink by mouth since before surgery, only IV's, she has had a bowel movement. Why won't she be allowed to eat or go home?
