Q: Paraumbilical Hernia Mesh Repair

Hi. I had a paraumbilical hernia reparied 3 weeks ago. The only odd thing is that at the site of the hernia seems to be a hard lump. It doesn't really hurt and the wound is healing nicely. If I put my finger in my navel, the top is rock hard - this is where the bulge used to be. It feels (to the touch) a bit like it did when it became incarcerated, except that it doesn't hurt. I understand there will be some scar tissue, but this seems rather strange. I wondered if anyone else had had a paraumbilical hernia repair and what their experience is. Thanks.

The body heals after surgery by scarring, and it is very common for patients to feel a firm "healing ridge" in the area of the hernia repair for a few months after surgery.

Occasionally, repaired hernias can also recur as well, although this is relatively uncommon. If this firm area begins to enlarge again, or if it does not begin to resolve within a few months of your surgery, then you should visit your surgeon again, and have him/her re-evaluate you.
