Q: pap smear while pregnant?
asked by: Rosie H on June 20th, 2008
Extremely EHEALTHy
hey Ladies. I read another Ehealth members post that stated touching the cervix before labor could promote changes to occur. Is a pap smear dangerous to me right now? I am 29 weeks today. On the day of my pap smear I will be 32 weeks.

When I first found out I was pregnant I got the pap, urine, and blood tests done. All came back normal. But around 14 weeks I lost my insurance and had to get another doc. Because of work I couldnt schedule a seperate appt to get a pap done. My new doctor didnt push it, she just asked for my med recs. Well I have been requesting the recs over and over with no luck. Now they want to start charging me for them. So my midwife has decided to do one on her own since she still doesnt know my pap results.

should I be concerned?

No. It will be fine. If it is my post you are talking about, relax. A pap smear is entirely different than someone shoving their fingers inside your cervix.

On the medical records thing, seriously? Your midwife should be able to call/fax your previous doctor and have your medical records mailed/faxed over to her. It takes maybe a day or two. Getting your medical records shouldn't be difficult. If it is, you should report this doctor to the state! Those records are YOURS.

Why doesn't your midwife trust that you know that your pap smear was clear? Ask her what she would do in the middle of your pregnancy if your pap smear came back with atypical cells? She'd have to WAIT until after delivery. You'll be getting another pap at 6 weeks anyway.

Getting one now seems silly.
