Q: panic attacks more frequent

I am a 23 year old male. I have had problems with anxiety for about 6 years. It seems like it's not as bad as it could be, but I have been having more frequent attacks. They are not just random attacks. It only happens when I am stressed or scared. My fiance' and I recently went to an amusement park, and I am terrified of heights. We got on a ride and I was fine, but the operator said something about our car not being secure. He came and shook it, then walked away and started the ride. I blacked out (which has never happened before) and when I came-to my chest felt like there was a body-builder squeezing the air out of my lungs. This is just the most recent time I have had an actual attack. Just about any time my fiance' and I argue or even talk about our financial situation I have symptoms of anxiety and sometimes a full-blown attack. Being that I have no health insurance, is there any other way of dealing with this without taking medicine or counseling??

Please let me know,
-Justin

Hi Justin,

I think you would be surprised how many people all over the world suffer from what you are describing.

What ends up happening is once the mind is overwhelmed, the body gives up. This leads to panic attacks, stress, problems with weight, blood pressure, etc. The body is literally fighting itself because of the mind!!!

The thing is we all have anxiety, fears, regrets, etc.

These are a normal part of life, however each one of us must find our own way of releasing all of this tension from the mind and the body.

In addition to regular sleep, exercise, diet, and quiet time - one of the things that helps me as an alternative to medicine or counseling is simple breathing techniques. Awareness of the breath is the key to quieting the mind.

There are a few good books on this subject, one of them being Living From the Heart by Puran Bair. Check it out...

You will be alright man. It's good that you are posting here, and seeking solutions with an open mind.

You're not alone

All the best
Daniel

I have had panic attacks and anxiety problems, too, and like Daniel said, breathing does help a lot. Take deep, slow, breaths and focus on breathing. Just a word of advice, from experience I know that antidepressants and antianxiety medications can make panic worse, especially if you ever decide to withdraw from the medication. So it is best to find other ways to deal with the anxiety. You are not alone!

TO "INSANEEMEMBRANE" : I have suffered for years; and the docs have always perscribed me anti-depressents xanex; thing is I am not depressed; and the anti-depressants make me sick, but the xanax always has worked. If you only have a few attacks a month; maybe having a few .2 (weekest) xanax on hand would help out. Also, the few times I was around pot that was a big no-no!!! Talk about an instant attack! Paranoia and all... I haven't touched it in years. Oh one more thing that helps; breathing into a lunch bag; it keeps me from hyperventilating. Good job on the quitting smoking ciggs.!!!
