My Mother-In-Law (age 74) had this surgery 1 year ago and is still not feeling like she did prior to the surgery. She was once a vibrant, health conscious senior adult who was extremely active prior to this surgery. She walked daily in the park, rode her bike, exercised daily, traveled and enjoyed her family so very much and visited many garage sales in her day. Today, she is a recluse in her own house, sleeping most of the time and unable to enjoy her once busy routine and not wanting to see anyone. She is so uncomfortable that she has to take the phone "off the hook" so not to talk to anyone. Her surgeon says he has never had patients with her symptoms and does not know next steps to take with her. I say nonsense and is it time for us to get a new surgeon who can assist? We live in the Albany, New York area and it was suggested that we visit Mass General in Boston to see a pancreatic specialist (Dr. Fernandez) who can help us. She now takes digestive enzymes to aid in digestion but continues to have issues. The doctors have tried changing meds, dosages, insulin, dietary changes but nothing seems to have helped. She has seen her GP, Gastro Specialist and of course her surgeon. Her symptoms include: Upset Stomach, Severe Diarrhea, and Body Shakes. Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, your discussion of her health issues did not mention what type of surgery she had, when she had it, or why she had it. Because of the very general nature of the information that you have provided, I am not able to offer any insights or suggestions at this time.

Sincerely/ Robert A. Wascher, MD, FACS
