This is a result of research I just did to finding connection between the insert and the pancreas --- In regards to Norplant inserts they provide low doses of progesterone which raise the blood levels of levonorgestrel to to prevent conception within 24 hours of insertion. So - especially if you also have high levels of Calcium in the blood - Levonorgestre is documented to lead to risk of inflammation of the pancreas. While not true Pancretitis swelling would cause discomfort and possible pain with the uppser abdomen being hard and painful to the touch.
If combined with an infection from the injection site which manages to reach the pancreas and colonizes within the organ then that would increase the risk.
pancreatitis is when swelling, infection and/or reduced blood flow in the organ causes tissue death and scarring in the organ. Either Acute or Chronic. Acute attacks can rise slowly or quickly but disappear with a couple days. Chronic is long term and is usually as a result of an acute attack being untreated. If serious enough it requires a long hospital stay to recover.
With swollen Pancreas you should not eat fatty meals and should eat High Carb foods. That is good for you anyway. Many smaller meals instead of larger single meals are also recommended. Don't panic but consult your doctor as soon as you can and he will likely order tests for calcium blood levels in the blood and to look for the markers in the blood that would indicate whether it is full pancreatitis. It is not a fact that the insert has caused this - it is also possible you had a pancreas problem before hand and this may have exacerbated it, which is good since otherwise it may have gone undiscovered.
