Q: Palmar hyperhidrosis Blue Shield

Hello,

I have Palmar hyperhidrosis, and previously had botox injections approved through Blue Cross. I now need to re-up my injections, but I've switched insurance companies to Blue Shield (without a break in health coverage). I'm told that I have to get pre-authorization from Blue Shield. Since this is a pre-existing condition, and I didn't have a break in coverage, isn't the insurance company required to pay for the botox treatments? I've already exhausted all other treatments for the problem, which is highly debilitating. When I had to get pre-approval from my previous insurance company it took 4-6 weeks. I really can't wait. What can I do?

You will need to get your certificate of credible coverage from Blue Cross and find out who to send it to at Blue Shield to get these covered. The certificate is usually only good for 60-90 days (I forget how long exactly) and is used as proof that you had coverage without any breaks or a short break. Hope that helps!
