Q: Painkiller Usage - Codeine

During the last few years I have had 6 knee operations, and after all of them I've been provided with Solpadol/co-codamol (containing codeine). At first I just used them for post-op' pain. But then started taking them for headache's and other things which probably don't require such a strong painkiller.

I also suffer with sinus problems which cause headaches, and I've noticed myself taking these tablets more and more. I know all about codeine and it's addiction, and would admit that I'm mildly addicted. I don't use these tablets every day, but I would say I'm likely to take two tablets maybe once or twice a week for headache pains.

Is this considered as too much? Will this amount cause me to have stomach problems later on in life, as I do find them a good reliever of sinus/headache pain........but I'd be lying if I didn't admit I enjoy the feeling that they provide. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hope I can help
I don't feel like 1-2 a week is too much. I would get worried if it became more frequently. I am just not starting to admit that I have a problem. I started with 1-2 percocets a week and they do make you feel great, the crash sucks, the during the feeling is great. I finally was able to get a doctor to regularly write me scripts and I know someone that works at a pharmacy so I can make a copy of the script and fill it twice. Now I am up to 4 pills a day. You dont want to be here. But like I said, I started where you or at and you could get to the point where you want more and more of that great feeling it provides. I need to get off them, I have heard that they can mess up your liver if taking for a prolonged period of time.

Well... don't go down that road
Over the last several years I was prescribed tylex for my back complaint... it has suddenly hit me that I am dependent on them to have daily movement and life... They say I can have 8 a day... but I don't... I was on 6 and now cutting down.. but you know I thought I am ok as these are prescribed and the dr said yes take these as they help and you have gone down nearly all other routes.. and today I sit with the shame of thinking I am addicted to these to live life.....

If you are already thinking that you are getting attached to these.. then STOP... think about what you are doing... If someone had told me even the darn doctor that they are addictive... I would never in a million years had them.

I am now cutting back every week.. and even though I am not taking as many as some I have read about... don't go down this route...I have started a blog to write about how I am feeling the shame and the though process of it all.. and it is dragging up lots of things from my past...

So... be grown up.. find alternative pain relief... if muscular.. try massage.. creams etc... DON'T turn to the darn tablets please..

Good luck.

I am addicted, I suppose you could say. I'm an American living in Europe and codeine is OTC in cough syrup. I'm taking more than 18 mg 2x's a day. I know, not a LOT, but considering I don't need it...
Started with just little sips from the bottle, now I can do max. 4 bottles a day... I cannot offer advice on how to quit, I don't have the courage. So I made a doc appointment, and the 10th July I go! If anyone is interested I can post what happens... As a reference, of course.

Good luck to all of you...
