Q: painful vaginal intercourse

I am a 21 year old female and I have been experiencing an intense burning sensation during vaginal intercourse. This has been happening to me for a little over a year. When I first start to engage in sexual intercourse there isn't any pain, but after a couple of minutes the pain becomes so unbearable that I have to stop. I don't have pain at any other time, only during intercourse. I recently took a home vaginal pH test and it came back normal. Any suggestions as to what it could be?

It could be that your body doesn't produce enough lubrication to sustain during sex- you might want to buy some store bought lube and reapply throughout sex- works wonders for me! Wouldn't have sex without it.

The other things that could cause it are your birth control type, either hormonal changes, irritation, or reaction to condoms or lube that you are using.

What type of protection do you use? Any lube, toys, etc.?

I am on Loestrin Fe BC. We have tried using condoms and not using them. It is painful either way. We have also used different kinds of lubes and nothing seems to help!

If you've tried all that- I'd seek the opinion of a doctor. There are many conditions that can cause painful sex that you'd want a doctor to consider. Are you having any other symptoms at all?

If I urinate immediately after intercourse it is very painful. But other then that I dont really have any other symptoms, everything seems pretty normal. It is very frustrating!

Yeah, that just sounds like irritation. First of all, make sure the lube you are using is water based, and has no scents or flavors or sensations or anything weird. Also, if you use condoms, make sure they don't have lube or spermicide or anything. And reapply lube every few minutes (this doesn't have to be so clinical, you can make it fun!) Be really on top of your lube... and see if that helps.

By the way, you should always urinate after sex! Helps avoid infection.

Do you masturbate at all? If you do, if you insert your own fingers (lubricated) or a toy into your vagina, does that hurt? Or is it only during sex? The reason I'm asking is because a small percentage of women are allergic to semen.

It sounds like an irritation to something during sex, because of dryness or some kind of allergy. But if you rule those out and don't think that's the cause, you should see a doctor to make sure there isn't some underlying problem.

Oh I forgot to add- some lubricants are advertised as "long lasting" and that might help you out.
