Q: Painful torn ligaments

My boyfriend broke his ankle 2 days ago. It's not technically a break because he has no broken bones but they think he tore some ligaments. When he elevates his leg like he is supposed to he gets TERRIBLE pain in his toes. Why is this happening? And what can we do to prevent it from happening? He can't sleep because every time he lays down or his leg is not far below his heart it hurts him a lot. Not his ankle but his TOES. He says it feels like they are on fire, a bit like when a part of your body lacks circulation.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

you said "they think" who thinks? why dont they know for sure if he tore a ligament.
did they give him anything for the pain?
he has to take something for the pain so he could be comfortable until it heals.
sometimes pain can shoot in other places, for example my hand hurts from typing a lot and the pain shoots up my arm to my shoulder.
but #1 he has to get something for the pain even if it's over the counter.
how did he hurt himself?

We were playing soccer. He has excess weight and when he ran and then stopped running his ankle just kinda cracked. We went to the doctors and they took an Xray, and they said that he had no broken bones, but probably a torn ligament. Unfortunately we were there late at night and there were no real experienced doctors so we got the 'interns.' Should we take him back to a specialist? He has various painkillers. Feldene, Ibuprofen and Augmentine (These are european names except for ibufrofen). None of them seem to help.

Also, he has broke both of his ankles before. More than 2 times. Even before he became overweight.

I forgot something else. The doctors also said that it would take 2 weeks to heal. But how can torn ligaments take just 2 weeks? They said he has to return in 2 weeks to get the cast removed and to put on a splint or something. I just can't see how 2 weeks could heal something like this. His whole foot and ankle are purple. His toes are not.
