I have a friend that is in her mid 50's and has been having a tough time with doctors. She has diabetes as well as a hyatal hernia (not sure how to spell that) and on top of that she has been overweight for a while. She has been trying to go to some exercise classes at our local gym but if finding that whenever she does any type of activity, even a short walk, she gets a very painful air pocket on her left side, just below the rib cage and starts to burp constantly. If she pushes on the area, she burps, and it will relieve the pain for a moment. Since it is very painful it is quite the hinderance in her daily activites and makes the idea of going to the guy a grim experience. All her doctor keeps telling her is that it is a normal problem caused by her hernia. She can't believe however that there should be this much pain associated with it, and worst of all, they are giving her no ideas on how to fix it. Can you please provide some direction as to where we can find a cause of this so we can find a fix? IBS was mentioned at one point, but it is only burping, not the "other end".

Belching is often one of the symptoms in symptomatic hiatal hernia,
Other symptoms are hiccups, difficult swallowing, coughing, chest pain or pressure.
When it is associated with acid reflux or GERD, it causes heartburn and the above mentioned symptoms.
When the stomach gets trapped above the diaphragm through the hiatus, it leads to upper abdominal pain.
Being overweighted is one risk for having this condition.
Hiatal hernia that produces symptoms, often needs to be treated surgically.
