Doctor,

I'm a 25 year old male worried that I may be at risk for HIV and I am desperately looking for an opinion. I have no medical insurance, that's why I'm posting here first. I apologize for the lengthy post, but I want to be thorough.

Here's the story: About 3 1/2 months ago, I engaged in unprotected receptive oral sex without ejaculation, protected insertive anal sex with a condom, along with various body contact with another male. There was also external contact between his penis and my anus, but no insertion or ejaculation. He told me that he's HIV- and supposedly had been tested sometime over the previous year. I felt relatively safe.

A month and a half or so thereafter, I developed some kind of infection in my mouth involving bleeding gums (especially when brushing/flossing) and a layer of my cheek/gums that would be kind of rough and would come off if I brushed it. My wisdom teeth are still in and are crowding my bottom jaw, which became painful during this time. My oral hygene isn't the best; I've not seen a dentist in years and I'm a heavy marijuana user. The condition persisted, but improved over the next couple weeks as I paid more attention to my oral hygene. After about three weeks since noticing the bleeding, my submaxillary gland on the right side of my jaw became visibly swollen. Three days later I went to the clinic at my college and got on amoxicillin, which cleared up the mouth infection and the swollen gland. Occasionally my gums will bleed when brushing, but nowhere near what it was.

During my mouth problem, I did have a similar sexual experience with another man, but have shown no other signs of infection. Is it likely that the condition I described is a result of my poor hygene, smoking, and wisdom teeth, or am I rightfully concerned that I may have been infected with HIV?

Thank you sincerely for your time.

It could be the poor hygiene ,smoking, etc. but you can never know for sure. You have to get tested for HIV to know if you have it or not. There is no way round that. There are free clinics and testes you can bye over the internet if you are afraid to talk to your family physician.I advise you to get tested for all STDs just in case.Always have safe sex and were condoms.Your symptoms are not specific to HIV but HIV can have many different symptoms.Get tested.
