Q: Pain under jaw

Hello, I'm new to the forum, I had a car accident 16 years ago which was the onset of my TMJ. I had physical therapy and I have just lived with the pain ever since.

I wear a splint at night. Sometimes I have sinus/facial pain, but more recently I am getting a weird pain that is directly under my jaw. It sort of feels like I am eating something sour and my muscles spasm under my jaw joint. Like when you clench your jaw, it is a very sharp pain and sometimes happens even when I am hugging somebody it is so weird.

My current dentist wants to fit me for another $1500.00 splint. However he is not a TMJ specialist - but feels this will help.

I live in the Southern California area. Any help?
Thank you in advanced.

Having chronic facial pain that is sharp or dull is a symptom of TMJ disorder.
Usually, tight and tender bands can be felt in the masseter muscle (you can feel this muscle just above the angle of the jaw as you clench your teeth).
In order to alleviate muscle pain due to TMJ, treatment need to include the muscles responsible for jaw movements but the treatments must include muscles of the neck, too.
Head and neck posture must be corrected.
Mouth guards and splints might be beneficial.
Try massaging the various muscles that may be involved. Probe all of the muscles of the face, shoulders, and back of the neck.
Apply moist heat or cold packs on the face, take vitamin supplements, and exercise daily.
