i have a sever pain in my left side just above the hip, it started last night after i went to the toilet. it made me lose sleep, now this morning it extremely tender, my side is also slightly swollen

You need to go to the dr. You very well could have pushed too hard. Depending on which side it is, you have very important organs in that area.
