i am 22 years old and i have a pain that comes and goes on the left side of my tongue. i have tracked it to the piece of skin that connects the tongue to the jaw. i was examining the area and i found a small painful bump on the back of it. it hurts mostly when i try to spit or when i move my tongue back and forth. the bump is not hard or anything but it does feel like a small piece of swollen tissue.

I'd suggest that you get the mass checked out by an ENT specialist. I wonder --- do you smoke or chew tobacco?
