I tore my left trapezius muscle 20 days ago. I thought it was just a strain, so I did not go to doctor. Pain and burning had was so bad I finally went to fo to ER.No test, I just told him my systoms. The pain has started to go down my arm and into my rib cage. The ER doctor said that there was nothing I could do and gave me valium and toradol for a week. I have been trying to do stretches but the pain is not going away. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to stop the pain and burning? I cant take too much more. flags

If i was you i would probably see a good sports doctor if its torn realy badly it may need to be stiched or if you have torn the tendon or if you have torn the tendon off the bone it will probably not heal well without some kind of intervention. Are you sure its the trap mucsle that is the problem

According to the ER doc. He said he had the same type of injury I did 15 years ago, and it happened the same way mine did. Both of us were trying to hold a person down with a bear hug. Except I was holding on to the person with all my might. I felt a pain in my shoulder, but still held on. So he came to the conculsion from his expereince. When my arm is in a sling it does stop some of the pain, but the pressure of the strap on my should and back agrevates the skin and makes the muscle burn evenn worse.

How bad is the pain? are you able to move your arm? I have this annoying burning on my scapula area, up into my trap. Massage helps, but it eventually comes back? Have you seen a surgeon or anything?

The burning is the worse part. I have limited movement of my left arm, the pain and burning has radiated to my rib cage amd kneck. So it is pretty bad. It is very hard to type with one hand! I do not know what to do. I know the fibro makes mycondidtion worse, but this is ridiculas. I would rather have a baby with no pain meds than this type of pain, it is over the pain scale. I am doing exercises but not sure if I am execising the right muscle or not. I am depressed an this is just making it worse. I do not know what to do.

what i have been doing is laying down on a tennis ball and and rolling up and down on the sore part. it reduces the pain for awhile. its helpful you should try it. also, im able to move my arm, but i feel like my scapula area and upper trap are almost like dead, holding everything back. i also have a radiating burning pain, but mines more annoying and persistent than painful. does this sound like what you have and are you sure its a torn trap? also, is yours more annoying or painful?

Hi tic97 the er is not always the best place to go for treatment the doctors are overworked, and they are there for people who require hospitalization, or have life threatening conditions, or when its after hours and no doctors are available, so they often rush through people with conditions such as yours because they are not geared towards resolving conditions like yours, and will say reassuring things to get rid of you. Its also possible that you have been given excellent medical treatment and this is all that can be done. But i don't think this is the case.

It sounds as though your pain is pretty bad i don't know what kind of injuries you have but by the sound of the pain you have i don't think you should be exercising you could simply make it worse. I don't know what the medical system is like where you live but i would visit a good doctor with the idea of getting a more thorough examination and hopefully some helpful treatment.

your right your fibro will complicate things. If you just want pain relief then a powerful pain killer will probably work but depending on the damage that you have done your injury may not heal properly.

Good luck

I agree with roller, exercise may do more harm than good right now.

I suggest you see a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon that specializes in shoulders for the pain you are having.

That's the way to get a proper diagnosis on what is and isn't going on with your shoulder and how to treat it.

It may be that you have more damage than just a torn trapezius muscle, could be tendons and ligaments involved and possibly something with the rotator cuff.

Fibro will make the pain worse, and muscle pain can have a burning component to it, but so can compressed nerves.

it sounds like a ortho doc that I suggested will want new x-rays done and probably and MRI as well.

Get to the type of ortho I suggested ASAP and let us know what the results are.

Fran
