Q: Pain Levels & Meds?

I've been diagnosed with a herniated cervical disc, degenerative disc disease, carpal tunnel & others I can't pronounce. I have been prescribed 120mg Oxycontin a day for over 3 years and for quite a while it really helped with the pain. It allowed me to work with minimal discomfort, but eventually tapered off. I have asked him to either have the dosage increased or to prescribe something else for the break-thru pain and he refuses. During my visits he would always ask me about my pain level both with & without medication. First of all, pain tolerance is different for every person and can vary in any given day. I answered as best I could. I find this so-called rating ridiculous! Second, how can I give the doctor an answer about my pain level without medication? Does he think on some days I don't take any? I He is the one that diagnosed me and since I've asked for more pain relief he's treating me like a drug addict. I've searched the Internet and found this to be the case with many patients. As a result, I've lost my job due to excessive sick days and can't afford a new doctors' consultation fee. I am 47 now and could think of nothing else to do but file for Social Security Disability and that takes time. Not being able to work & be productive in anything is taking it's toll and I feel helpless. Has anyone been in this situation? I don't know what to do.

Pain levels & Meds
Do I know how you feel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been in the same situation on and on for years. When I didn't have insurance, I suffered so much and then I'd get mad if I went to a walk in clinic and they gave me 20 5mg vicodin and a few flexeril and sent me on my way. I've seen orthopaedist, a neurosurgern and just saw a pain management doctor this past week. I feel like a drug addict always having to bed for something to get me out of pain. I feel like if I said a 5mg doesn't work that they think I'm "doctor shopping" and just looking for drugs. I don't have time to see all the doctors I have just to be dismissed. I have high hopes for the pain management. I think some of them will work with you financially. Best of luck - just wanted you to know you are not alone. It sucks.

I'm so sorry that you suffer from chronic pain. The best solution I can give you is to find a specialist in pain management. These people are trained to know when people are in genuine pain and when they're just doctor shopping. Since you've been on pain medication for several years, it stands to reason that you need an increased dosage. A good doctor will recognize that and help you through your pain.

Social Security Disability can take years to get, but it is worth applying if you believe that you may be out of work for at least 1 year. I'm over a year into the process now and am hoping to get my benefits sometime this year.

I hope things work out for you and that you get relief from your pain and your financial difficulties!

STOP SEEING GP's, if you have a pain condition general practioners are not trained to handle chronic pain maintanence, and you will notice they shy away from giving you anything that they havent already perscribed, that includes dosing upwards. 3 yrs at the same oxycontin dose would mean you need break through meds some days or a mild increase of 20mg to 30mg of extra oxycontin doses. You need to see a pain management specialist, regular docs even the one that may have done your surgeries are hunted by the DEA, pain management docs are the only ones not afraid of our nazi healthcare system. damn the DEA
