Q: Pain in the left arm and chest
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 20th, 2009
having left arm pain with chest pain. I've had pains like these before. but never was diagnosed properly. I am pregnant and need to know what to do about these pains? Do I think of it as anxiety and try to relax or do I take the chances, go to the doctor and have them do nothing, because they can't x-ray my chest, since I'm pregnant?

Heart Disease and Heart Attack Answer A5443

Chest pain with left arm pain can be due to heart problems. Having in mind that your heart works more than usual due to the increased quantity of blood it has to pump, you might want to go to a cardiologist and have your heart examined. The heart might not be supplied with enough blood, thus causing local lack of oxygen (ischemia) and pain. The heart pain in this case is called angina pectoris. The pain is described as stabbing and sometimes the patients find it difficult to breathe. The duration of the pain is very important. If it lasts for only several seconds you should consult a doctor whenever you can. If the pain lasts longer than several minutes (3-5) you should go to a doctor immediately. If for any reason you cannot reach a doctor in 30 minutes and the pain still lasts, go to the Emergency service because a heart attack is already undergoing and severe damage to the heart might have already occurred.

If the results from the heart tests are normal, you might check with an orthopedist for neural disorders from the nerves originating from the spine. Cervical spondylosis might be the actual problem.
