Q: Pain in the extremities stemming from the kidneys
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 8th, 2008
I have had stones in the past. I had to have one removed 15 years ago thru surgery. I also had vascular surgery this past year on a clogged artery in my neck.It was 99% clogged.
I have been having pain in my legs and feet for a while now they did test to see if I had any blockage in my legs but found none. Could this be coming from my kidneys and the blockage in my arteries from the area of my kidneys? I just want to know what these results mean from this ultra sound. Thanks

According to the symptoms you describe (kidney stones in the past, pain in the legs), you might be experiencing pain in the legs due to a swollen ureter. It is not unusual for the kidney stones to cause it, especially when a small one passes from the kidney into the urinary bladder. The sensitive nerves that come from the tissue around the ureter and the nerves that come from the legs end in very close segments of the spinal column, thus making it hard to differentiate where the signal really comes from. It is not likely that the blockage in the arteries around the kidneys cause the mentioned symptoms.
