Hi, I just read some replies from sevaral different people with butt pain. Mine started about 5 months ago. I signed up to run a marathon. My first go figure, and developed this symptom. I was not even in training yet when it began. Anyhow, it is a real pain in the butt. It will sometimes mimic sciatica. The pain goes down my one leg ( right leg). I thought it was my piriformis muscle. Recently, I went to a PT who really believes it is a hamstring tightness. I have been doing many different stretches that were prescribed to me and some strengthening exercises for my piriformis and hamstring. I hope this works. I have not had to stop running yet. I am training now, and it is going okay. I do feel the pain, and sometimes it is like a shooting one. Does anyone else have this problem? Can you suggest anything different?
Thanks

What do you do for warm ups and cool down? Were you working out at all when you started developing symptoms? Nothing happened around that time that could contribute to this?

Butt pain
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I always stretch before and after my runs. One thing I do not do is strength training for my legs. That is a mistake. Opps:) I have been running for 17 or so years. I was using a jogging stroller to run with my youngest child up until recently. Our neighborhood is hilly too. I stopped running with her for now. Also, because I run on roads a lot, it may have something to do with the uneven surface. Who knows. Also, I am a pretty good 5k 5 miler, so when I run on the treadmill at the gym, I often try to beat my time. I could have injured it that way. The only other thing is that for training for this marathon, I am suppose to slow down 2 minutes per mile. You use your muscles differently.

Yesterday, I ran four. I could tell the strength training and more specific stretches are helping. The pain is not gone, but I felt stronger on that side. One great piece of news, is that the PT I am going to was in the news paper today. He was voted the best area PT.
