Hi,

I'm 28 and have had lower back pain since I was 15. Ive had mri's and have L4, L5 herniation's and problems with S1. Ive been told to lose weight and that would ease some of the pressure from my disks. I have lost some, apparently not enough. I'm so frustrated. I'm able to walk around now for a few mins, but not without pain. I cant sit down for more then it takes to go to the bathroom.

I've been paying for short term disability insurance at work, but cant even claim it because I cant sit long enough to see a doctor. Even if I did go to a doctor, they cant help me. All they ever do is prescribe pills or suggest cortisone shots and send me home. Ive had cortisone shots before, all sorts of pain pills, muscle relaxers, ibuprofen/naproxen, all sorts of therapy, nothing has worked... I'm sure the naproxen and ibuprofen do, but there's only so much they can do. I'm icing my back, laying on my back with a wedge under my knees to relieve some of the stress on my lower back and nothing is helping.

Do you have any suggestions for me? I need to get back to work asap. Rent is coming up. Also I think I am going a bit crazy being cooped up here. =(

Have you been seeing a spine specialist or are you seeing your pirmary care doctor for these meds?

You say that doctors can't help you. When was the last time you saw a doctor?

How old is your MRI?

Obviously you can not continue in the pain you are in and you can not work like this as well.

If you have had problems since you where 15 years old, you have some serious spine problems going on and they need some kind of treatment.

If you have been seeing a spine specialist and not getting any relief of your pain, then it's time for you to seek out another opinion from other spine specialist.

I suggest you seek out a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon that specializes in spines for a full spine evaluation.

I understand how much pain you are in and I've been there myself. Being driven to a doctor was some of the worst pain I have ever suffered in my life and I've had a lot of pain; childbirth twice, ruptured appendix, horrible gallbladder attacks, and nothing compared to the horrible pain that I suffered with my spine and the never ending nerve pain that was so horrible.

But, I knew I had to see doctors, get evaluations, get tests and be properly diagnosed and treated.

It will be the only way for you to get properly diagnosed and treated.

Sounds like you will need an updated MRI to start with in aiding a spine specialist in diagnosis.

Once you have that diagnosis, then a treatment plan can be put together.

If conservative treatments don't help you with the pain, then it may be that you will need surgery to help you.

In the mean time, if you find that ice is not helping you, you might want to try moist heat.

I posted a thread entitled 'simple way to provide moist heat"
http://ehealthforum.com/health/simple-way- to-provide-moist-heat-t167232.html

you might want to give that a try and see if it will help you.

We are not doctors and can only provide simple suggestions to relieve your pain.

You really need to get to a spine specialist as fast as you can to get a diagnosis and treatment plan set up for you.

A good spine specialist can properly diagnose and treat you, but you have to be willing to go and listen to the doctor.

Believing that they can not help you will not help you. Not all doctors push medications on you, a good one will do what is necessary to find the cause of your pain and treat you.

Losing weigh can reduce the strain on you spine, but it's difficult to lose weight when you are in pain and can not move to exercise.

Good luck and get to a spine specialist.

thanks
Thank you for the reply, my latest mri is about a year old. im sure they would want a new one anyway.

ive never seen a spine specialist, mainly chiropractors, doctors, pain specialists, etc. id go now, but with no income coming in because im not working it would be kind of hard. im going to try the moist heat and hope that it works. once im back on my feet ill find a spine specialist. i had never even considered one.

Thank you.
