Q: Pain in left lower abdominal area

The last two nights I have woke up with extreme pain in my left abdominal area below my rib cage, & even extending to a tenderness in my penis. This pain gets me out of bed, where sitting in a chair seems to make the pain slightly less. It does not seem to have anything to do with what I eat, & I do not drink alcohol. The pain lasts about an hour & 30 minutes, then I can fall back asleep. In the morning the pain is gone but a tenderness remains in the same area the pain was for several hours. Some people have told me it could be stress related, as my father is in the hospital dying with bone cancer?? I am worried, I have lost my job, & have no health insurance, please help. Thanks, ralph

Extremely eHealthy
Upper left abdominal pain below the ribcage, that lasts for several hours and is made better by sitting or bending forward, is suggestive for pancreatitis, or inflammation of pancreas.
Gallstones and prolonged alcohol use are the most common causes.
There are several other, less common causes of acute pancreatitis, like certain medications (steroids, diuretics), high levels of triglycerides in blood,
high blood calcium levels, surgery or trauma to the abdomen, infections such as mumps.
Upper left abdominal pain that wakes one from sleep can result from peptic ulcer, too.

You should find a way to see a physician!
Best wishes!
