Q: Pain in ankle after surgery

I had surgery on my right ankle over a year ago and it still bothers me. Something is also clicking in my foot. It hurts at times and is stiff at times as well. My knee also bothers me especially when I am standing or kneeling for some time. I injured iwhen I accidently kicked a ball over a fence and then climbed the 5 foot fence (a little over my height), and then twisted my body around to avoid my neighbor's garden and landed awkwardly in a hole. I fell and heard a huge pop. My ankle never healed as I had fractured it, also torn ligaments and damaged one of my tendons. This is why I needed surgery because it never healed properly. But it stil bothers me over one year after surgery. Could my knee may have been injured also from that twisting I did? Do you think there is still something wrong in my ankle after that surgery?

I also have clunking in my ankle every way I move it and it has been one year after surgery. I am also still feeling pain in my ankle and even my knee.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I think after an injury like this that your walking gait is affected...The pain is so horrible that you try to compensate for it by putting more stress on another part of your body....I know...Been there and done that...Give yourself some time...Don't overstress and hope that it heals up the way that you want it to heal...It is a rough injury and will take time...

Good luck,
Caroline.

Thank you for replying. I did call last week and talked to the nurse and she talked to the physicians assistant and he just prescribed prescription pain pills which gave me wicked headaches and had to stop taken them. I was so upset that he didn't take the time to look at the injection site.

The doctor who gave me the injection was a physicians assistant. This was the same doctor I saw a couple of weeks post op. after I had ankle surgery over a year ago. This wasn't the same ankle surgeon I had during my surgery, who gave me the injection almost three weeks ago.

Should I call my regular doctor? PCP?

That injection in my ankle is bothering me alot. It had been almost three weeks and the injection site is still big and discolored. There is still bruising around the site and to the right of the site. How would I know if it was infected or not?

Any adivce would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I would get in to see someone immediately...Whether it be your doctor or whoever...Someone that you trust...Make sure that you do not have an infection in that area of injection or what is going on...It is your health that is at stake...

Thank you for replying. I called my PCP about the injection and I talked to the nurse and she said that they don't take care of cortisone injections. So what do I do now?

Should I call the physicians assistant back and tell him about the injection? The injection sitre had not got any better, it is still discolored and the bruising is still there, and is still sore and this has been almost 2 1/2 weeks ago.

Hi Cassie: I am sorry but I just saw your message...I would definately call back if this is still bothering you...I guess more than anything I would wonder about an infection....

I called my ankle surgeon and I see him late August. I am glad I got an appointment, but I am also nervous and worried.

I still have a question though. The type of surgery I had was ankle Arthoscopic surgery and a Brostrum repair back in April 2008. I went to therapy for six months and was done in Oct. 2008. The injury I had before the surgery was a fracture, torn ligaments, and a damaged tendon.

Is it normal to be experinceing pain over a year after surgery? Could something may have come undone from all the activity I have been doing for the past couple of months? I have been getting alot of pain in my ankle for at least three months now.
