Q: Pain from Ganglion Cyst

I am 23 Years old and I have be a cosmetologist for 4 years including my 2 years of schooling. About a year ago I discovered a bump on my left wrist, I went to an Ortho and he told me it was a ganglion cyst. After 3 months and an MRI it shrunk. I was then referred to 7 weeks of occupational therapy, which ended up making the pain in my wrist worse.

The pain I am feeling is extremely close to, if not tendonitis pain (thats what the therapist said). Sometimes the muscle below my thumb feels tense. After a busy day at work I find the pain is an 8 on a scale of 1-10. and the pain will last for 1-3 days.

The problem is my hands are EXTREMELY valuable to me and my career. Is there anything I can do to stop the pain besides anti-inflamatories.

Is surgery a relavent option, should I even think about it?

Why not get a wrist brace?...They sell them at Walgreens for about $20....Wear it at night and when you don't need the use of your hand...See if this helps...There is always the opinion of surgery, but the question being "will it help"?...If it was me, this is the step that I would take....

Good luck,
Caroline

I already tried the wrist brace, I have had 3 different kinds, 1 from the ER, one from the Therapist and a thumb retrainer. As I said Occupational Therapy only made the pain worse and I need the pain to stop soon becasue it is interfering with my job.

I sure wish that I had the right answer on this as it would help many people...Seems as if the joint wears out...

ganlian cyst & carpal tunnel
I had one removed via surgery about 4 years ago and it has not returned - however, mine was only mildly painful, it's appearance is the main reason I had it removed. Currently I am searching for any information on these cysts against the Carpal Tunnel - my daughter's recent MRI for wrist pain shows a small ganglian cyst deep in her wrist that apeears to be pressing on carpal tunnel - we are trying to find out how to relieve the pain she has.

From what I have found out, these can be either drained or removed...Other than this only a Dermatologist would be able to advise...

Good luck,

Caroline
