Q: Pain during intercourse

During the last trimester with my 2nd child, my husband and I didn't have intercourse because I was so uncomfortable and awkward. After my c-section and the following 6 weeks, we finally got to it and it was completely painful. I felt like a virgin again (only I don't remember it being that painful the first time). 13 months later I was pregnant again and experienced the same thing. Our 3rd child is almost a year old and every time we have intercourse I have pain and sometimes bleeding from my perineum area. I am nervous to have sex anymore and we go for up to a week usually between sessions and I know that's probably making it worse. We normally have plenty of foreplay and use lubricated condoms but those things don't seem to help that much because it feels like a space limitation problem rather than a lubrication problem. Additionally, I am breastfeeding still (only had a three-month break between 2nd and 3rd children) so I don't know if it could be hormonal.

Have you spoken to your doctor about this yet?

No, because I've been sort of embarrassed about it but it's getting to the point where I need to get it figured out. Do you think she will say anything more than the usual "take more time during foreplay, blah, blah, blah..."?

I'm sure she'll give you a vaginal exam first.

If she just suggests more foreplay or lubrication without actually giving you an exam, then tell you've tried that and want to make sure everything is normal.
