Well I am after advice on how to cope with severe pain - at the moment I am not coping. I am on the list for a spinal fusion come Oct, having another MRI scan 22nd Aug to see whats going on with my neck and shoulders as have lost the feeling down one arm nearly completely. I struggle to lift a kettle, no matter how little water I put in it, as it feels like my shoulder wants to 'pop'.

I'm on Morphine MST 100mg morning and night, and can take Oramorph in between if I need it.

I am also on Ibruprofen 800mg 4 times a day,
Gabapentin 600mg 3 times a day
Diclofenac 100mg 3 or 4 times a day.

I cant remember the last night I slept properly. At the moment I dont feel I can cope with the pain much longer, it hurts to sit, stand, lay down so try to rotate movement every 15-20mins.

I am struggling to eat properly - the morphine makes you feel nauseaus, so a bowl of cereal can take me 90mins to eat, most times I give up.

Sorry this is a depressing post, I am just at the end of my tether. For 3.5 yrs my doc told me everyone gets a bad back. I argued not like this they dont, not where they require surgery.

Hello Snapigator,

Sorry to read about the severe pain that you have.

Please talk with your doctor about the bad side effect you are having with the morphine. He/she really needs to know that.

You don't say how many doctors you have been too for advice on this matter. If only one, then I would highly recommend that you search for the very best spinal surgeon in your area. Make an appointment with the doctor at the top of your list, and then make an appointment with the doctor next on your list. It is always a good idea to get a second opinion.

Please don't delay in getting the 2nd and 3rd opinions.

You mention about "having another MRI". May I ask what your doctor said your earlier MRIs showed?

I am also wondering if you perhaps have a separate issue with your shoulder. Has your doctor said anything about that?

Have you ever received an epidural injection for your pain?

Wish you the best. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I had an epidural twice and it did absolutely nothing for the pain.

I have seen a couple of consultants - I basically made a fuss as I have been seeing the doctor for 3.5 years about this problem, but to him it was normal.

They are testing me for other conditions such as MS etc but will wait and see what shows up.

The MRI's showed prolapsed spine, bilateral sciatica and then arthritis. I knew about the arthrittis as had it as a child.

I have been given sleeping tablets as I cant remember when I last slept through the night.

Thank you for your support, means a lot to know that people care and that know what the pain is like. As I said to the doctor today, if I had the tools I would ripe my own spine out of my body, I just want the pain to go away. He said to me - you need the operation. October isn't too far away - I replied - try a week feeling like this and then tell me 8 weeks isnt bad - he said point taken!

Hi

Thanks for your reply, I don't know if I could get that treatment as I am in the UK. I will look into it.

Stress? Yes plenty of that, hubby wants to get a divorce so it looks like I will have back op and then move out, so thats adding to the stress levels.

I guess I will cope somehow.

Take care
Love D x
